Music for 10/14/20!!! Leyla McCalla, Hip Hop Hoodios, Los Mocosos, Noblezza

@@@ Leyla McCalla: Song for a Dark Girl (Smithsonian Folkways, 2020) All of today’s listens are off the WRIR weekly playlist email. No, if any, whities up in here today, except me listening. I like this label as they release high quality and not necessarily mainstream music of all flavors. I caught a great new mariachi record from this label early last year, for example. This is a pre-release track about a lynching of the song’s narrator’s lover. Ms. McCalla’s voice is pretty plain but there’s a straightforwardness to the singing that is disturbing and makes the lyrics even more horrifying. She accompanies herself on acoustic guitar, fingerpicked style. The guitar is designed to support the singing and it does that and well you know this is not a party track and it’s not a pick me up and it’s nothing you’re gonna hear from Bruno Mars or Lady Gaga or Beyonce but it’s quite beautiful and sad and I would check out more of it.

@@@ Hip Hop Hoodios: Mexican Miller (Self released, 2020) I’m not of Mexican ascent and I don’t face deportation but I hate this piece of shit Stephen Miller. They’re using a sample from Phil Collins in the chorus and they rhyme in Spanish in the verse. I never meant to put those kids in cages, I’m just a self-hating Jew that rages. That’s a high quality line right there and I’m not qualified to comment on the Spanish rhymes. The sounds are pretty partyistic with some sung choruses, a horn synth patch, lots of rhythms on top of the pretty straightforward drum machine beat, and of course Phil Collins. Who doesn’t want more Phil Collins in their life?? I was said to hear that White House chief of racism Stephen Miller caught Covid and I certainly hope he fucking dies.

@@@ Los Mocosos: All Grown Up (Los Mocosos, 2020) A blend of rock and a schmear of salsa (especially in the horns) with a singer doing a blend of both styles rocking it in Spanish in places. I really dig how the piano sits in the mix a little low profile but adding to the tune in a very hip way. The horns are tasty and I’m agnostic on the guitar playing, and I like the background vocals. The energy here is quite high with the drummer working time and a half and a lot of instruments in the mix. It’s interesting how these guys blend these styles together to make something their own.

@@@ Noblezza: Coletera (Codiscos S.A.S., 2020) A super energetic mash of cumbia and hip hop. Let me see what the word coletera may mean as he’s chanting it let’s see maybe 50% of the track. Coletera!. My rando searching says it means ‘scrunchy’ as in a scrunchy that folks use to put their hair up. I’m not sure if that’s correct but it certainly doesn’t mean world peace, or imagine, or something particularly serious as this is a quick hit one and done party track led by the MC who as you can see from the first frame of the video below is quite devilish.
