@@@ Kate Bollinger: Grey Skies (House Arrest, 2020) All of today’s listen’s come from last week’s Line of Best fit weekly email. My first impression is that this song is a white lady bit of classic black newer r&b sounds. Watercolor smeared keyboard sounds, fat amorphous bass synth, some intimate guitar sounds, a chill beat with a tight snare sound. Bollinger’s voice is framed well within the mix but I find her stylings to be of the neither hate nor love variety. I’m guessing some white listeners who don’t peep the original version of this style might like this track. Is it a full bite or an homage? That’s up to others to decide.
@@@ Wesley Joseph: Martyrs (Eeviltwin, 2020) Alternative hip hop! Very silky and intimate sounds with Mr. Joseph coming on British MC style. Thick, sinuous bass with r&b influences. These sounds are delicious in my headphones. A few intergalactic spaceship sounds quickly flit across the stereo field providing some transient energy and while I don’t get a distinct idea of what’s going on from the lyrics, the sounds are headphone-tastic! Lock me in your ivory tower, take me to the top and show me pure luxury — that’s the vocal hook. That’s pretty good. The idea of restraint and less is more is not at play here. I don’t find it completely objectionable, I dig the bass and there’s a nice guitar solo in here but I would let it sit out for a bit to decarbonate.
@@@ NZCA LINES: Pure Luxury (Memphis Industries, 2020) Super uptempo, 80’s influenced pop with a few black music feels sprinkled throughout. Falsetto vocals and a funky bass most notable in that area of black music. This feels a bit like what I imagine a hot ginger ale enema would feel like. Aggressively bubbly, maybe a bit too carbonated. It’s not a reach to say that there may be too many vocal tracks up in here.
@@@ Eaves Wilder: Won’t You Be Happy (Little Cousin, 2020) Brit pop to end the day. Every track comes with a side of chips! Oh that’s racist, right? Wilder’s voice sounds mad girlish, not that it’s bad but it does effect your listening experience. As far as I can tell Brit pop is notable for the fact that you might get some rock elements up in yer British pop — a distorted guitar here, some rock drums but still mad pop flavors there. And that is the case here as you get a good dose of manicured power chords to go with danceable rock drumming. It’s well done, unmessy rocking and pleasant contrast betwixt the female singing and the crunchy guitars.
