Music for 7/13/20!!! Wetware, Keleketla, A.A. Williams, Flor de Toloache

@@@ Wetware: Exaggerated Bliss (Dais, 2020) The first three listens of today’s post are from last week’s All Music notable release email and the fourth listen is from a National Sawdust (club in BK) weekly email.  My first impression is that somebody shoved a cello into a running diesel engine but the dark industrial sound gives way to a pulsing setup with a female spoken word and some NIN style drum machine-ing.  She’s super detached and the sounds are a tad menacing, it’s a dystopian flavor pack as I listen to the beginning of the next track.  Also has a bit of Laurie Anderson but differently feeled.

@@@ Keleketla: International Love Affair (Ahead of our Time, 2020)  Apple Music has four mixes of this tune including one with Tony Allen on the kit.  Oh, I miss Tony Allen what an immensely talented drummer.  There are a few modern updates to the classic horn driven sound and a pretty distinct lounge-y feel at points in the tune.  My favorite parts here are the driving bassline and the keyboard playing, whoever is on the keyboard does not need a Red Bull, they’re doing just fine sans caffeine.  The vocal hook, ‘International Love Affair’ is okay but a bit uninspired.  The horn player is tearing a solo out now so maybe the whole point of this is to groove a little, blast a solo instrument 1, groove a little more, blast a solo instrument 2, etc.

@@@ A.A. Williams: Melt (Bella Union, 2020)  This track opens up in classic PJ Harvey style — dark female energy, dissatisfied and Imma guessing an explosion is on it’s way.  Maybe I’m wrong as it appears to stick with a Nick Cave dark sadness before the drums come in and it does rock, restrained at first.  It never fully explodes, it combines a big ambient crescendo over a midtempo rock drumbeat.  I love it when folks lose their shit, I have a preference for that but this is not what it’s about.  This here is pretty and sad and firm.

@@@ Flor de Toloache: No Sigas ( , 2020) I got to this all female mariachi band via the BK club National Sawdust weekly email.  It’s awfully strange to hear a voice stunningly close to Gwen Stefani singing mariachi vocals in this track.  Oh my, it’s a cover of the No Doubt track, what an amazing job they did in covering this!  Ths singer sounds just like Stefani (but singing in Spanish!), it’s madness I tell you.  It does not rock, or it rocks in a mariachi flavored manner but besides the vocal stylings the playing is dramatical but super cool to hear it done as a mariachi.  It’s not often I get drawn that far into a track.  I’m listening to the beginning of the next track and the super lush mariachi flavors keep coming, I might have to swing back on this record and listen to it more closely.
