Music for 10/9/18!!! Sarah Davachi, Kano, Steve Hauschildt

@@@ Sarah Davachi: Pale Bloom (Superior Viaduct, 2019)  I got to this minimalist musician/composer via a Flavorpill weekly email.  Slotted as an electronic record the first piece (clipped below) opens with solo piano.  Around 4 minutes some electronic elements emerge to contrast with the piano.  It’s minimal and tasteful but I skipped ahead to the Perfumes II piece and it’s more solo piano which I like all right.  The second piece brings in voices, a bit electronically altered.  I like this music but I’m a little bored by it.  I’m now checking out the third piece that opens up with a sustained organ chord and I’m grateful for the different sound.  Oh, more piano, eesh.  I guess I could have used some more tension or something to engage with that fulfills the composer’s minimalist desires while keeping me listening.

@@@ Kano: Hoodies All Summer (Parlophone UK, 2019)  A UK rapper I got to via a music magazine called Crack.  Such a distasteful music magazine name!  Oh fuck off.  I am not bullish on most UK hip hop but yet I can’t stop listening.  It’s the accent, it’s like Crack.  Kano comes on in this first tune super urgent and serious.  Against a string swell Kano gets super aggro.  After this first tune which I didn’t love he pops some rhymes over an interesting arrangement.  A quasi-glitched/tremolo synth is sweet but his accent, my the accent!  I dig the sounds here and I respect his serious mission but I’m having trouble comprehending his lyrics (obviously not his fault) and I continue to prefer American hip hop.

@@@ Steve Hauschildt: Subtractive Skies (Ghostly, 2019)  A pre-release single I got to via the Twatter.  The video below contains a sort of planetary theme and when you hear the ping pong synths hit at the beginning of this piece it makes sense.  Lot of particles whirring around and bouncing.  A gauzy blanket of synth rises among the bouncing balls.  Trump’s bouncing hateful balls, rando.  There is a simple kick rhythm and we will see if it explodes out into anything recognizable as techno or whether it remains on the ambient side of the fence.  Right around 2:45 we get some splashing hi hat type of sounds.  It builds in energy until it starts to evaporate as it ends and it never really got to the techno side of town which is fine.  Not the most breathtaking journey every but solid.
