@@@ Rufus Du Sol: Solace (Reprise, 2018) I saw these guys mentioned in Bob Lefsetz’s music biz email. I might have heard this record before as I listen to an assload of music. I’m on the first tune and I tell you I have to put on a hat cuz it’s raining cheesy cliches. And thankfully this is not a repeat listen. Oy, why all the drama? This first tune is titled Treat You Better and he wants to treat her/maybe him better. Oh my, I’m gonna have to restrain myself here because there are a lot of things happening here that I strongly object to. We’ve mentioned the cliche lyrics, and the fingersnaps and the beats, and oh fuck off this is like having a smiling Adolf Hitler costumed crossdresser shove a giant candy bar up yer ass. They have weaponized sweetness I tell you! I made it three minutes and clicked to the second tune, but I’m not hopeful people. The hook in the second track is ‘I see myself in your eyes’, that’s best you got? Oh Lord.
@@@ Pharmakon: Devour (Sacred Bones, 2019) Opening up with aggro, noisy pounding I got to this record via this week’s CFV playlist email. The vocals come in all fucked up but not distorted, more a vocal synth I’m guessing. Musically there’s not a lot going on besides the insistent pounding and the noise but that’s fine. The second tune, Spit It Out, continues with the pounding/pulsing rhythms and the distortion and the spooked vocals. I’m not sure if it’s a dick move to expect anything more than the sounds that they have going. As it is the record seems better suited to being a disturbing movie soundtrack. I’m not asking for verse/chorus, verse/chorus but some variation seems reasonable. I bet this could be blazing live!
