Music for 5/10/19!!! Madonna, Pianos Become the Teeth, Vampire Weekend

@@@ Madonna: I Rise (Sire, 2019)  Off the Apple Music hot tracks section and the second track from Madonna’s new and 14th album.  I’m usually a little suspicious when somebody puts the last tune of a record out for a single but this single is different as it samples the young woman from the Parkland mass shooting in Florida.  It’s a loping uplifting dancefloor banger.  I can tell you as one of the most active listeners in the country (yeah that’s right) I’m getting tired of the empowerment lyrics.  All the rising and the bravery and theovercoming is getting a bit stale.  It’s not an offensive track but it does seem that close to billionaire Madonna who rolls with the creme de la creme is surfing a bit on the misery of others.  I don’t think she should have made the lyrics in first person but that’s just me.  Which begs the question: can white women be white saviors?  I’m guessing yeah.

@@@ Pianos Become the Teeth: Wait for Love (Epitaph, 2018)  A final listen off an All Music notable release email from 2018.  Yikes, I was expecting some variation on classic southern California punk but this comes out mad mainstream radio friendly.  I dig the drummer but the generally uninspiring puss vibe to the playing doesn’t super work for me.  The drummer is killing it but the tunes are soapy dishwater.  I don’t think I’m the intended demographic for this record.

@@@ Vampire Weekend: Sympathy (Spring Snow/Columbia, 2019)  You gotta give Vampire Weekend some props for putting a song entitled Unbearably White on their latest effort.  Because I’ve thought the same exact thing.  This single is an explosion of high energy, quirky indie melody and strangeness.  Little bits of falsetto background vocals, strummed acoustic guitars, little weird section breaks, handclaps, it’s a basket of major label indie love!  Bask in it people.  There are some undercover classic rock vibes going on here as well.  They put a little electronic chopped business at the end of the track and throw a little filtered eq at certain points so they did indeed cover all the bases.  These guys are tight and play well but they don’t sound like they could fight their way out of a paper bag.
