Music for 2/18/22!!! Etuk Ubong, Frank Turner

@@@ Etuk Ubong: Ekpo Mmommom (Night Dreamer, 2020) I got to this via a tweet from bandcamp via the Twatter. Slotted as jazz on Apple Music, Ubong is a trumpet player and this track, the opener on a record called Africa Today is a thick slab of rhythm and melody driven by an excellent organ sound which is church-y, high in the mix, and pretty unique to African music I’ve heard. The drummer is on fleek, super full of energy and bringing a few arena rock fills in his backpack. Fusion-y bass and big horn lines though thicker and not super brassy in the mix. I stayed for the beginning of the second track African struggle and it is smokin’. Faster tempo, congas pumpin’, space organ this time, and more intricate horn lines. These guys (and maybe gals what do I know) can play!!! Check it out.

@@@ Frank Turner: The Gathering (Polydor, 2022) I got to this via a music publicist email. Classic UK/Irish pub punk that’s been added to with cock rock and big So Cal singalong choruses. Turner is a veteran and he has no trouble working the microphone and keeping up with this bombastic and not so simple pump it up punk. Fairly big guitar solo and a lot of vocal tracks here. It works fine as a technical achievement but does detract a bit from the fuck it and let’s get on with it attitude. After reading Turner’s bio it’s clear he doesn’t hew to any one genre/sound/style as he started in post-hardcore and then went acoustic. So that explains the blend of sounds up in here, he don’t give a fuck which I respect. The song is meant to rouse and I would find it more rousing if it was a bit more stripped down.

Music for 10/2/21!!! Madi Diaz, illuminati hotties

@@@ Madi Diaz: Nervous (Anti-, 2021) I saw this artist on this week’s Line of Best fit but am partially checking it out as I find Anti- to be an interesting label. This is a retro indie guitar type of track with internally focused lyrics, some decent guitar crunch with plenty of power chords and big straight rock drumming. I like that the band is presented with some muscle and the drums plenty high in the mix while she gets mental on the microphone about all the things that make her nervous. Mental in a good way. As the song rolls on we get more background vocals as seasoning which keeps it fresh though I don’t love them, it’s extra to my ears.

@@@ illuminati hotties: MMMOOOAAAAAAYAY (Snack Shack Track, 2021) Off this week’s All Music notable release email. I was thinking for some reason that this was going to be hip hop as I associate illuminati with hip hop but it’s freak rock in the verse before it solidifies into a power pop punk chorus and then back to the Primus type jagged rock business. Lots of energy with bubbly synth sounds in the break as she screams all the things she wants done to her. I’m guessing Ms. Hotties is from California, I’m bettin’ on it and lemme hit the GooglePimp, oh yeah just the right amount of coffee this morning. She’s from L.A. and I saw this blurbed as tenderpunk, which I think is accurate. I’m checking out the fourth track, Threatening Each Other re: Capitalism and I dig it. Acidic lyrics and an arena rock flavor.

Music for 9/13/21!!! Maria Isabel, Yungblud

@@@ Maria Isabel: Baby (Warner, 2021) Both of today’s listens are off this week’s Line of Best Fit. It opens up mellow and a bit melancholy as the character in the track is protecting her lover. The lyrics revolve around this idea. A little vocalizing in Spanish at points. Her singing is mostly restrained though in the chorus she gets a very big and rich reverb where she sings baby and then ‘I will die for you’ coming after that. I like the synth that sounds like a guitar that opens the track and I don’t like the chorus that much. It’s musty dark cheese. I guess these major label tracks (I listened from bottom to top today) feel they have to really bring the Avenger style emotional drama to get attention — I just find it hollow. There are some real nice elements to the track, I think the chorus just got a bit out of hand.

@@@ YUNGLBUD: fleabag (Interscope, 2021) Here we have a major label pop punk punker complete with a droopy red schmohawk. I don’t know how the folks who made this track can sleep at night because they bit Nirvana in a shameful manner here. Bits of more than two of their big hits are up in heah, I can’t bother myself to list the instances but it’s true. Shameful. He’s a self-hating fleabag but the presentation is crunchy, Rolls Royce high end. Oy society can be so confusing. I guess some fans of Nirvana might feel this while I think many more would be horrified at the mugging that has occurred here.

Music for 2/22/21 Tash Sultana, Death by Unga Bunga, Cameron Graves

@@@ Tash Sultana: Greed (Mom & Pop, 2020) All three of today’s listens are off last week’s All Music notable release email. This is slow funk rock jam with chill situation guitars, a falsetto female vocalist, a little poppin’ bass (literally poppin’) and sit back and funk-a-fy the drums. Good for a frat house that thinks it’s enlightened, you know stupid in a different way. I don’t mean literally stupid when referring to this tune just to the frats, I’ve always hated fraternity culture. It’s well done, it’s just not my cup of tea.

@@@ Death by Unga Bunga: Egocentric (Jansen, 2021) Some super Red Bull ol’ school Orange County poppy punk. Reminiscent of Superdrag, NOFX, etc. I like the singer, I like the drummer, and I like the sounds but the whole package could use more of a refresh. There are oddly enough some space lasers right before it goes into a Queen style melodic guitar solo and that wasn’t really the refresh of the sound I was expecting but it’s good for a few chuckles. Not perjorative chuckles I always appreciate when somebody colors outside the lines. Good for the suburbs I guess.

@@@ Cameron Graves: Sons of Creation (Mack Avenue, 2021) Slotted as fusion it comes out more like muscular prog rock with a tad of classi metal swirled up in there. Drums especially. It’s got a piano and I think Graves is the piano player but the width and crunch of the guitars covers the piano like a thick sauce in a lot of places. I would have worked harder to make the piano and guitar work better — it works much better when the guitar player is playing melodically so maybe they should have altered the crunch factor of the guitar. This is most definitely a mash and I appreciate that, but if you’re gonna go heavy, I’d like to hear different sounding drums and more chaos. This is shopping mall fusion jazz/metal.

Music for 6/11/19!!! Lust for Youth, Plaid, Pelican

@@@ Lust For Youth: Lust For Youth (Sacred Bones, 2019)  Off this week’s All Music notable release email.  All Music has this slotted as post punk revival and Apple Music has it as Indie pop and Apple Music has it right.  Unfortunately.  Deeply rooted in ’80s synth rock  it does have guitars (some) and drums (electronic but maybe not on all the tracks) and an ’80s type of singer.  Oh boy, not really my cup of synths.  Don’t like the sounds and not my type of singer.  Probably fantastic people but I’m not up for this.

@@@ Plaid: Polymer (Warp, 2019)  Also off this week’s All Music notable release email.  The first tune, Meds Fade, contains a straight drum machine beat and a lot of chopped and glitched side business.  Some aaaahhhh vocals, it’s a bit of an odd duck overall.  A little dancefloor banger, a little abstract, and even a little bit rock ‘n roll.  Kids today.  The second tune, Los, gets into the video game pong synths but then puts a slightly off kilter groove under that and it’s off to the arcade!  The weird ass arcade where the pizza eats the Italian guy chasing it.  It’s pleasantly losing its structure and becoming more chaotic.  Maybe not losing its structure but sounding more crowded and chaotic.  I like the ripping drum sample on the third tune, Maru, best of what I heard.

@@@ Pelican: Night Time Stories (Southern Lord, 2019) Doom metal off this week’s All Music notable release email.  The record opens up with a pretty acoustic guitar and a distorted bass and no drums.  Ah, there’s the crush right there but it’s a very polite crush — I want a hammerlock!  I’ve been clear that I don’t like prog swirled up in my heavy metal.  The second tune Midnight and Mescaline comes out rocking, more hard rock than the suffocating heavy metal we all know and love.  I’ve checked these guys before and I have re-concluded that they are a heavy band for people who don’t like heavy metal.

Music for 2/26/19!!! Pete Berwick, John Mayer, Pink

@@@ Pete Berwick: Island (Self-released, 2019) Gruff, weary rock that reminds you of Social Distortion with less of the pumped up punk vibe.  Somehow I’m on this musician’s promo email list which is fine and today I have space.  The second tune, clipped below, is a slow one with an acoustic guitar.  But it does retain the world weary mid tempo rock vibe.  And the acoustic guitar gives way to the electric guitars which sound great by the way.  I like Berwick’s voice as it has character to it.  Rock is a tough sell these days but this is well done if you roll that way.  No pun intended.

@@@ John Mayer: I Guess I Just Feel Like (Columbia, 2019)  I saw big mouth music blogger Bob Lefsetz praising this tune so I thought I would throw it a peep.  In general, I think Mayer is a very good guitar player who is a little short on fire and his voice is just awful to my ears.  He’s a born panty quaker and he just goes with it so his music is soft as baby food or what fills a diaper after the baby food has been digested.  He’s the Mark Knopfler of our time.  This is a sad sack tune about how everything is turning to shit, which it is, but I prefer a good whip up that would inspire folks to go burn some shit down.  The tune outros with a shuffle beat and more shredding but the Mark Knopfler observation holds true.

@@@ Pink: Walk me Home (RCA, 2019) In general I have respect for Pink but this is a biscuit.  It’s a retrofitted new country midtempo ballad rocker but with a few modifications.  It does the classic arena rock explosion in the chorus and while millions of folks might fall for this fake uplift I ain’t buying it.  I want to like it but I also have some self-respect.

Music for 12/6/17!!! Les Amazones D’Afrique, Powerdance, Cloud Nothings

@@@ Les Amazones D’Afrique: Republique Amazone (Real World, 2017)  I heard the single from this record but I never peeped it til now as it’s in the top 50 Guardian records of 2017.  This first tune is great with fat bass, trippy vocals and some righteous hand drumming added to the main beats.  I like this second tune as it relaxes into a betwixt slow and midtempo groove.  I don’t usually like the records with tons of guest vocalists but these are all women and the tracks are tight and unified.  I would contrast the funkiness of this record with the African record with the Kronos Quartet strings on it.  This is a mash as well, but it’s less uptight and high end with a high funk quotient.  This record will end up on my year end list, check it out!

@@@ Powerdance: A Safe and Happy Place (Powerdance, 2017)  A white boy disco banger off the Guardian’s top 50 of 2017)  It definitely does not have the funk of the Les Amazones record but it’s aimed at the Wonder Bread crowd.  Four on the floor, big simple vocals and a propulsive guitar line.  It’s a pretty skeletal arrangement and I don’t think the vocalist has the chops to get it airborne.  Check for yourself.  It pumps harder at the outro but that energy should have been moved forward.

@@@ Cloud Nothings: Life Without Sound (Carpark, 2017) Pop punk off the Guardian list.  I usually associate the pop punk with uptempo sing-a-long business but this first tune is not full on and it sports some more reflective chord progressions.  I like it.  The second tune does bring more tempo and classic pop punk but it’s not mindless without going straight to emo.  I’m not a huge pop punk guy but this is a good specimen for the genre.  The singer is pretty straightforward — sometimes the singer is so popped out I want to beat ’em with a 2X4 but this guy plays it straight — neight overwrought, nor too ironic, just songs with no bullshit sauce.

Music for 4/25/17!!! Bleachers, The Dolleyrots, Conrad Schnitzler and Pole

@@@ Conrad Schnitzler & Pole: Con-struct (Bureau B, 2017)  Some euro-techno electronic music off an All Music weekly notable release email.  I dig this first tune Wurm — it’s not a straight boom-titch beat.  This is pretty spare music with a tad of funk to the beats and just a tad of synth cloud or thread for you to get with.  This third tune, Lacht, continues with the undercover funk and the well aimed garnish.  I went back to the GooglePimp and snagged this third tune because I’m feeling and because I give I give I give.  And y’all don’t do shit, but that’s all right I’m not gonna guilt anyone.  It’s cool you don’t do shit but if you feel like it you can peep this third track if you can manage to pull your head out of your bong and your iPhone and be bothered with nutritious music.  Feel free to hit me up with some fat tracks, it’s not like I would say no.

@@@ Bleachers: Hate That You Know Me (RCA/Sony, 2017)  A pre-release single off the Apple Music hot tracks section.  I’m guessing from the vibes off this guy that this a white boy with a shitload of Prince records that he’s attempting to honkey-ice.  The vocal melodies are especially bitten from Prince.  Oh, I don’t know if I can place the track that he bit the vocal hook from.  My advice for those of you who dig this guy is to forego and throw on some early pre-1999 Prince.  A little Dirty Mind or whatnot.

@@@ The Dolleyrots: Whiplash Splash (Arrested Youth, 2017)  Some super poppy SoCal style three chord power pop punk.  Fronted by a lady that’s either strung out on Red Bull or naturally perky beyond belief (or both).  Lots of power chords, rock drumming and big vocal hooks.  If some of this energy went into world peace or a rotating anal dildo for Trump I would be more for it.  Bouncy as fuck like a methed puppy.

Music for 1/26/17!!! Mannequin Pussy, Monkey Junk, John K. Samson

@@@ Mannequin Pussy: Romantic (Tiny Engines, 2016)  Some squally and hopped up punk off this week’s CFUV weekly email.  At least the first tune, as the second one is more of retro-grunge-y ironical tune.  It’s got that whole quiet then crush move that Nirvana took to the bank.  Oh, the female loses her shit on this third tune, Ten.  I like that.  This is a mash of the poppy side of the Breeders with some Bleach era Cobain.  High energy.

@@@ MonkeyJunk: Time To Roll (Stony Plain, 2016)  Off the folk/roots section of the CFUV weekly playlist email.  After a bunch of interwebz non-connectivity I got the ball rolling on this electric blues record.  The singer is rocking part growl/part preacher in this first tune with dual guitars with solid tones.  Let’s peep more.  The second track, Time to Roll, is a slow blues about driving with clean guitars that explodes out into a big anthemic chorus of ‘Time to Roll’.  Regular readers know I like dirty, crusty blues, Imma huge Howlin Wolf fan.  I dig the ZZ Top vibe of this third tune See the Sign but I could use more grit.

@@@ John K. Samson: Winter Wheat (Anti-, 2016)  Also off this week’s CFUV weekly playlist email.  This first tune features large sounding Daniel Lanois style production.  Big reverbs, slow drums, contemplative sounds for NPR listeners.  I don’t like the lyrics on this first tune Select All Delete.  The second tune, Postdoc Blues, is more uptempo but I don’t like these lyrics either.  I believe in you and your Powerpoint — yikes.  Too hipster-y.  The title tune is better and I like a bunch of the sounds on this record but it’s not aimed at me.  Check for yourself.

8/19/15: New Politics, The Alchemist, Tom Carter, Doug Locke

@@@  New Politics: Vikings (DCD2/Warner Bros, 2015).  Super bombastic pop rock off the Beats highights page.  Big beat drums, aka known as frat rock beats, with half sung/half rapped lyrics, and a pretty standard guitar riff.  They bite the Beasties with the no sleep til Brooklyn part of their vocal.  Everywhere I Go, I’m as high as United, fly with me, Everbody knows there’s no sleep til Brooklyn.  Hooky and douche-y a the same time.   Oh boy, this second tune heads right out to the shopping mall for a rock banger.  I’ve grown very accustomed to simple lyrics, booty bumpin lyrics, but these guys worked hard to pack extra stupid into their music.

@@@ The Alchemist & Oh No: You Disgust Me (Mass Appeal, 2015).  Some left field hip hop I got to via the Beats Highlights page.  Twangy spaghetti Western guitars, some dub delays, and a generally dirty ass vibe in this second tune, Reversals.  I like the beats on this tune, though I can’t tell if it’s a drummer or programmed.  A toilet flush, most excellent!!  The third and fourth tunes have the soiled funk of the Wu, but with less stripped down arrangements.  I’m usually pretty put off by the gangsta lyrics but the arrangements here are hot and it’s not full gangsta, tho a couple folks get bullet tatted in the third tune.  Imma gonna swing back on this record.

@@@ Tom Carter: Entraertne (Three Lobed Recordings, 2015)  A very well done, multi-tracked and processed guitar piece I got to via the Twitter.  I like to check out the Twitter records they’re brief.  I can hear loops of backwards guitars, a short arpeggio, and some improvised guitar over that.  The tune peaks at around 4 minutes (8 minutes total) and I like the understated but epic ending to the track.

@@@  Doug Locke: Give it Up (Doug Locke, 2015).  An electro r&b single I got to via a music publicist email.  Falsetto vocals, a fat synth bass, with some ping pong synths on top of that, all over the classic boom titch club beat.  He does a good job on the vocals and there’s a nice wanky guitar hook.  The promo email likens him to Lenny Kravitz, which is pretty deceiving.  It’s an r&b/disco club banger yo, better than most.  Nice string arrangement at the end.
