@@@ G.H.: Housebound Demigod (Modern Love, 2016). I’m not sure what this record is going to be but I got to it from being on the Stranded Records mailing list because I used to subscribe to the Aquarius Records mailing list. Oy, a mouthful. Thus far, this first track is sort of belching, farting whale noise — low frequencies, somewhat rhythmic and I’m waiting for something else. Now we’re getting a moaning singer and a drum machine kick and I’m kinda bored. Let’s peep more. This second tune opens up with more energy, still abstract and dark but I don’t know why they put the boring biscuit up front. That initial burst of energy is diffusing away and it’s back to low frequency drones with some occasional crackle and an industrial drum machine kick. Not for me. In my humble opinion these tunes should be shorter and edited to be tighter and more focused.
@@@ Asphyx: Incoming Death (Century Media, 2016). Some old school thrash metal — think Motorhead after pounding a small pyramid of Red Bull. Classic thrash drumming and power chords, power chords, power chords. I’ve turned this record up twice in the first two songs. The singer is half caveman/half hardcore punk and though these guys aren’t blazing any trails they have a solid, no bullshit pissed energy. Excellent guitar sounds and a thick drummer. Check ’em out if you’re pissed, it’s okay if you’re angry, fuck society. Society is a complete load of shit.
@@@ Black Marble: It’s Immaterial (Ghostly Int’l, 2016) Also off this week’s CFUV weekly email. I check out some of Ghostly’s releases as I’ve found some stuff to groove on as well as some electro biscuitry. This first tune is opening with a circuit bent, glitched feel — like the robot that washes your floor has gone full kernel panic and is smearing the dog shit all over the living room instead of cleaning it up. Ah well, the second tune moves into more predictable ’80s rock land. Somebody cut a Cure fart up in here. Dig the Cure if you want, I’m no fascist, but it’s not my twirl. One more tune. This third one is more ’80s sounds — if it sounded like the Minutemen I would be psyched but it’s not.
@@@ Kenny Chesney: Cosmic Hallelujah (Sony Music, 2016) You greasy motherfuckers know how much I love new country music. It’s the same thrill you get when you slow down to peep a car accident. It’s just awful but you can’t pull you ears from checking out more. I especially love the money shot buildup from the verse to the chorus. It’s an exploding pig in a blanket screaming across the sky. In this tune Chesney is setting the world on fire with Pink I like Pink and I have no clue why she chose to associate herself with this slice of Pizza Hut. Maybe she’s got bills. Let’s peep more. This song is called Noise and if only it was a satisfying hunk of noise to contemplate. Oh yeah I’ve heard this piece of shit before, it’s awful. He’s wondering where all this Noise is coming from — I would suggest Mr. Cheesy, I mean Chesney, peep the mirror. To me, this is awful noise — the most cliche bullshit I’ve heard in a bit. This Bon Jovi in a cowboy hat yo.
