10/20/16: G.H., Asphyx, Black Marble, Kenny Chesney

@@@ G.H.: Housebound Demigod (Modern Love, 2016).  I’m not sure what this record is going to be but I got to it from being on the Stranded Records mailing list because I used to subscribe to the Aquarius Records mailing list.  Oy, a mouthful.  Thus far, this first track is sort of belching, farting whale noise — low frequencies, somewhat rhythmic and I’m waiting for something else.  Now we’re getting a moaning singer and a drum machine kick and I’m kinda bored.  Let’s peep more.  This second tune opens up with more energy, still abstract and dark but I don’t know why they put the boring biscuit up front.  That initial burst of energy is diffusing away and it’s back to low frequency drones with some occasional crackle and an industrial drum machine kick.  Not for me.  In my humble opinion these tunes should be shorter and edited to be tighter and more focused.

@@@ Asphyx: Incoming Death (Century Media, 2016).  Some old school thrash metal — think Motorhead after pounding a small pyramid of Red Bull.  Classic thrash drumming and power chords, power chords, power chords.  I’ve turned this record up twice in the first two songs.  The singer is half caveman/half hardcore punk and though these guys aren’t blazing any trails they have a solid, no bullshit pissed energy.  Excellent guitar sounds and a thick drummer.  Check ’em out if you’re pissed, it’s okay if you’re angry, fuck society.  Society is a complete load of shit.

@@@ Black Marble: It’s Immaterial (Ghostly Int’l, 2016)  Also off this week’s CFUV weekly email.  I check out some of Ghostly’s releases as I’ve found some stuff to groove on as well as some electro biscuitry.  This first tune is opening with a circuit bent, glitched feel — like the robot that washes your floor has gone full kernel panic and is smearing the dog shit all over the living room instead of cleaning it up.  Ah well, the second tune moves into more predictable ’80s rock land.  Somebody cut a Cure fart up in here.  Dig the Cure if you want, I’m no fascist, but it’s not my twirl.  One more tune.  This third one is more ’80s sounds — if it sounded like the Minutemen I would be psyched but it’s not.

@@@ Kenny Chesney: Cosmic Hallelujah (Sony Music, 2016)  You greasy motherfuckers know how much I love new country music.  It’s the same thrill you get when you slow down to peep a car accident.  It’s just awful but you can’t pull you ears from checking out more.  I especially love the money shot buildup from the verse to the chorus.  It’s an exploding pig in a blanket screaming across the sky.  In this tune Chesney is setting the world on fire with Pink   I like Pink and I have no clue why she chose to associate herself with this slice of Pizza Hut.  Maybe she’s got bills. Let’s peep more.  This song is called Noise and if only it was a satisfying hunk of noise to contemplate.  Oh yeah I’ve heard this piece of shit before, it’s awful.  He’s wondering where all this Noise is coming from — I would suggest Mr. Cheesy, I mean Chesney, peep the mirror.  To me, this is awful noise — the most cliche bullshit I’ve heard in a bit.  This Bon Jovi in a cowboy hat yo.

9/30/16: case/lang/veirs, Trentemoller, Mild High Club, Zedd

@@@ case/lang/veirs: case/lang/veirs (anti-, 2016).  an all female folk rock supergroup off this week’s CFUV weekly playlist email.  The vocal harmonies dominate in this opening track as one would expect.  The second tune Honey And Smoke is a K.D. Lang led tune — a love song with a peppy drum beat and classic cute background vocals.  The third tune is back towards the folk rock from the pop rock and I like this music well enough.  It’s not super emotional, it’s kinda light.  I only say that as sometimes the sheer volume of feelings in some records by female artists can be a bit off putting for me.  Because I’m dead inside.

@@@ Trentemoller: Fixion (In My Room, 2016).  Another record off this week’s CFUV weekly email.  This opener is a very serious art school 1980’s synth rock influenced mope bomb.  Big synth clouds over a thick pulsing bass and a dour female singer.  Half goth with no Cure bounce.  This second tune Never Fade is following the same formula and I need a fucking Red Bull, Imma snoozy.  Black nails, black lipstick, paper clips through ya earholes!  The third tune Sinus is a 15 minute opus about a sinus infection — wait, no.  All right I’m out, stay if you like.

@@@ Mild High Club: Skiptracing (Stones Throw, 2016)  California dream pop (with some funk thrown in at some point because this is out on Stones Throw) I got to via the CFUV weekly email.  The singer sounds a bit like one of the Bee Gees with a sinus infection — I like to tie my post together with annoying repetitive references.  Now that’s not a bad thing, it’s something to aspire to. Singing like you have a sinus infection is a rare skill.  Let’s peep more and see if the pop fades.  The second tune Homage starts a tad more disco/soft rock and now we’re getting a little more interesting swirl of influences here.  I’m postulating that there was some purple cough syrup while this record was getting tracked — it’s got a baked/high vibe to it.  Maybe just a lot of trees and then a swim in Drake’s big pool.  He’s got one in L.A. and it’s bigger than Dre’s.

@@@ Zedd: Ignite (Interscope, 2016).  A major label electro pop rock nugget off the Apple Music Hot Tracks section.  In this case they might mean hot as in hot air from somebody who just rocked a lot of garlic knots and Mountain Dew.  Oh, we’re going full head bob/disco biscuits and this sucks.  Big tension and drama in the verse and then the full EDM money shot in the chorus.  Wow, I would rather listen to dogs fornicate.  7 million hits on the Googletube for this stale fart, people love this shit!  Shame on you America.

9/7/16: Sia, David Vest, The Hot Sardines, Travis Scott

@@@ Sia: The Greatest (feat. Kendrick Lamar) (  , 2016)  Blurbed as a powerful dose of tropical pop it’s another in a long line of New Age songs about being brave (Sara Bareilles), roaring (Katy Perry), and being the greatest (Sia).  The sounds are all right, and she keeps referring to her stamina which is draining my stamina.  She’s got a slurry, syrup-y flow on the mic and the last minute is a lot of vocals.  Solid C.  In addition we might be approaching peak Kendrick. 6 million views for this biscuit, oy!

@@@ David Vest: Devestatin Rhythm (Ark-o-matic, 2016)  Off CFUV’s weekly playlist email towards the top of the folks/roots/blues section.  I peeped a New Orleans influenced electric blues record recently and this one sports some shuffling funk on this opener, West Coast Saturday Night.  The second tune Stop This Madness is an anti-gun swagger track with some nice guitar work and bumping horns.  He’s got a happening band and I dig his plain voice.  I’ve clipped this tune below because it seems of this time.

@@@ The Hot Sardines: French Fries & Champagne (Universal Jazz, 2016).  Some Broadway-esque large ensemble jazz I got to via this week’s CFUV weekly playlist email.  Big horn section, upright bass, female singer, piano player and a drummer.  This is jazz for responsible members of society.  They do an interesting flavored coffee version of Robert Palmer’s Addicted to Love.

@@@ Travis Scott: Goosebumps (Epic/Sony, 2016)  This is an Apple Music exclusive and this is a hip hop track heavy on the synths and the cough syrup influenced sounds.  Scott opens the track thick and blurred and he moves up a register but there’s still a quasi-twisted vocal effect on his voice.  It’s a bit strange how he goes from the loverboy to the chorus where he gets into some vocal gunshot shit.  I think this whole tune was de-tuned as it’s a got an odd swervy flow to it.  And this tune does not list it but Kendrick Lamar has a verse on this here tune so what I was saying about Kendrick, it might be true yo.  Need an MC call 1 800 Kendrick!

6/5/16: Fionna Brice, Troller, Gevurah

@@@ Fionna Brice: Postcards From (Bella Union, 2016).  I got to this experimental rock record from this week’s All Music notable release email.  Each song is a place, the first is Berlin, the second is Paris yadda yadda yadda…..this tune Berlin open up with melodic violin playing over some layered drones.  Purdy but not rock and starting to sound a bit repetitive and precious.  On to Paris!  The second tune opens up with solo piano and occasional violin.  I just went back to the All Music email and it does indeed say experimental rock.  That’s funny because to my ears this sounds like a pop/classical record with slightly New Age production.  Oddly not rocking for a ‘rock’ record.  Ah well, it’s the music business you really never know what you’re gonna get because they don’t bother to label music correctly.

@@@ Troller: Graphic (Holodeck Records, 2016).  One of the records of the week at Aquarius Records out in San Fran.  Poor San Fran, ruined by all those tech assholes.  The first tune opens dark, synth-y, metallic, and drone-y.  It may be an appetizer to ease you into the darkness.  And it is.  The second tune, the title track, features a full band with synths out front and a super reverbed female voice.  Dark and unsettling is what I believe what they’re going for.  This is odd as it’s not rocking enough to be a rocking record and not dark enough to be a real gloomer.  It retains a middle of the ground pop feel amidst the detached vocal sound and the layers of synths.  That actually sounded like a real record review.  Fuck!

@@@ Gevurah: Hallelujah! (Profound Lore, 2016).  A black metal/death metal record off this week’s Aquarius email.  The first tune opens up conspiratorial, with a lot of whispering and a slow, buzzy guitar before it gives way to the doom.  Slow, ominous doom coming down Broadway, people!  After a bit of that it gives way to a most tasty thrash — sweet and suffocating like the Catholic church.  The second tune, Cosmic Putrefecation, starts again with the quasi-Satanic chanting and guitar buzz but I predict the crush will be commencing forthwith.  And here it is for your earholes!  The singer is more on the post-hardcore tip and you can make out what he’s shouting about if you strain the ears.  He is not dirty, funk ass Neanderthal grunting pig/human.  These guys are from Canada, I thought I would throw that non-sequitur in.

Google/Youtube shouldn’t be making money off flood of Prince videos

Prince didn’t have videos up on Youtube because he didn’t get paid for them and it pulling his live footage probably made people buy more Prince tickets.

There is an article over here about how all sorts of awesome Prince footage is hitting Youtube and sure enough there are ads for diapers and cleaning supplies and all manner of other Google advertising before every video.

This is exactly what Prince was talking about.  Google/Youtube makes the money first and hands out crumbs (if at all) later.

They should take those ads away from those Prince videos or take the videos down.  Fuck Google.

How Justin Bieber wins twice with Penis Gate

From here:

“My first thing was like… how can they do this? Like, I feel super violated,” he said. “Like, I feel like I can’t step outside and feel like I can go outside naked. Like, you should feel comfortable in your own space… especially that far away.”

First off, let’s not equate going outside with your dick out to be the same as being Jewish in Nazi Germany.  It is not the greatest oppression ever endured.

More importantly, Bieber gets double PR points for having his junk out.  First off, he gets all the attention with the dick pictures.

Second, he gets to act violated and that generates double bonus sympathy points.  Love Justin more after you looked at his junk on the intertoobz.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the whole thing was manufactured by the Bieber PR team.  For real.  There is nothing the music business loves more than free publicity and the quickest path to getting that free publicity is to be a young performer that takes his/her clothes off.
