Music for 2/21/18!!! Freak Heat Waves, Milk & Bone, Bashavel

@@@ Freak Heat Waves: Self-Vortex (Telephone Explosion, 2018)  A little psych, a little goth and a little indie on this single that I got to via the CFUV weekly playlist email.  The singer is lower register and mashed up with various effects over some rhythmic synth playing, standard indie guitar work and a straight rock beat.  It’s all right.  It’s the same sort of vocal schtick that the Butthole Surfers singer used to rock — grating, weird.

@@@ Milk & Bone: Deception Bay (Bonsound, 2018)  Slotted as pop on the Apple Music but sporting pretty heavy trip hop sounds the opening track is all right.  With these beats this is closer to new style r&b than pop.  The female singer goes for the lush, sensual sound but it’s not overdone and it’s presented in a minimal arrangement.  I don’t usually like this genre/style but the arrangements here are very tasteful.

@@@ Bashavel: Hoorhay (Hudobny fond, 2018)  Some straight-isa jazz I got to via this week’s London Jazz blog.  Instrumentation is violin, piano, bass and drums.  All the songs are in sport some sort of Eastern European language titles and I hear a bit of Balkan at points in the recording.  They get into some fairly different playing in the last third of this tune which I’m having a helluva time finding a tidbit for my ardent fans.  Ahem.  There is an instrument that came in during that last third of the opening track — it sounds kind of plucked and stringed but I’m not sure what it is as I can’t find shit on these musicians.  For straight jazz, which is far from my favorite bag, this is high energy with some interesting passage.  It is available on the Apple Music so probably on the other streaming ripoff stores, I mean streaming stores.  Come and get your 4/10ths of a penny!!!  And don’t bitch about it either.

Music for 2/19/18!!! Djeneba & Fousco, Wave Break, Barren Womb, Candy Ambulance

@@@ Djeneba & Fousco | Kayeba Khasso (Lusafrica, 2017) I can only hear a pre-release single on the Apple Music so I can’t make much of a statement about the record but this tune is pretty sparse with a melancholy vocal melody sung by a man and a woman.  It’s pretty epic with some other stringed instruments but not a drummer.  Oops, I’m an idiot, here’s some hand percussion and they’re singing in a full instrumental environment.  Beautiful singing and sounds, it’s not my favorite style of African music but listen for yourself.  I got to this record via the WRIR weekly playlist email.

@@@ Wave Break: Plaster City (Self-released, 2018)  I’ve been listening from the bottom of this post to the top so this is another female fronted rock band.  This is more an emo kind of vibe to the tune with more pushing by the band and more melody from the singer.  I think the lyrics are meant to be listened to but I’m not doing that.  It’s aspires to be a meaningful tune which is fine but it’s not meaningful to me and check for yourself you might love it.  I got to it via the blog Indiepulse

@@@ Barren Womb: Old Money/New Lows (Spartan, 2018)  A Norwegian noise rock outfit that I got to via the blog Indiepulse.  The first tune has a shouting singer over heavy guitar riffs and thick tom drumming.  I wouldn’t put these guys in the noise rock slot, it’s more of a punk rock musical base with a over caffeinated irritated preacher on the microphone.  If you’re looking for some heavy riffage without the societal disapproval of listening to a metal record these guys will hook you up.

@@@ Candy Ambulance: Spray (Candy Spray, 2018)  A self-released female fronted hard rocking outfit.  The singer sounds like she’s almost about to lose it and it’s done over a lot of rock guitars and a pretty straight rock drummer.  The second tune takes it down a notch and they move easily between rock and more manic punk flavors.  It’s a pretty tight outfit and the first tune is my favorite.  The first tune is clipped below.  I got to this record via a music publicist.

Best of 2018 Pick 1

Courtney John: Ecosystem (Soul Fire, 2017)

A perfectly crafted combination of old school roots reggae flavors with a great band and a singer I like a whole bunch. The band is tight and relaxed simultaneously with space for organ solos, guitar figures.

A lot of bands go for that old school reggae record but they don’t make it for a variety of reasons — the singer can’t carry the load, the production is too modern, the band has no funk to it, etc.

This is pretty and tough and heartfelt all at the same time.

Music for 2/7/18!!! MGMT, Grand Analog, Shining

@@@  MGMT: Me and Michael (Columbia, 201). Super mainstream synth pop I got to via a music publicist email.  Soft buttery vocals, gated snare sound, some arpeggiated guitars but a plethora of synths.  This is some pretty cliche pop shit as far as I’m concerned.  A lot of manicured sounds and a song structure but pretty lacking any soul or passion.  Cloudy and pretty synth farts.  I made it 2:49 out of 4:49 and it hurt a little bit.

@@@ Grand Analog: Survival (Grand Analog, 218). A Canadian dub/hip hop project I got to via the CFUV weekly playlist email.  The first tune has sort of a darker chopped feel while the second one is pretty standard old school funky drum machine dance floor banger.  Digital Kool and the Gang but with an MC.  The tune with Posdnuos from De La Soul (clipped below) is really well done, check it out.  Somebody with solid knowledge of sounds did a really good job on these sounds.

@@@ Shining – X- Varg Utan Flock (Season Of Mist) Some black metal off the CFUV weekly playlist email.  Looks like a blast of Scandinavian metal from the looks of the word salad titles which I won’t waste the time here typing.  After a initial intonation they get into a pretty nice throw down.  Big energetic hard rock drummer and dual guitar attack.  The singer is really quite upset but since it’s in some language that doesn’t matter.  Hey that’s just a joke, I love wherever he comes from.  He’s doing good work emotionally and these guys are kicking hard. They have just a bit of boogie woogie that gives way to some acoustic bullshit in the middle of the track.  I hate the epic acoustic guitar breakdowns and intros, it just pusses out the whole thing.  If I want a giant fucking military parade with some boot stomping fucknuts (like El Trump-o!) I don’t want to stop and have a fucking tea party in the middle of it.  And now we’re back to the noise and squall, good goddammit.  These are big sandwiches from 6 to 8 minutes each track and they’re a little math-y as they move from section to section so get your cup of herbal tea and your thinking man’s metalhead hat on.

Music for 2/6/2018!!! Scott McReery, Dua Lipa, Django Django, Hookworms

I’m back after a brief illness — a physical illness on top of my standard basket of mental problems.  I kid, I kid, I’m totally normal.

Secondly, it’s been good to see people complaining about Justin Timberlake’s half time show and Prince’s involvement in it.  My 9 year old said “he’s not good enough to do the show without Prince”, that’s my boy.  To wrap this up, Prince went out of his way to denounce musicians pimping the image and good feelings towards deceased musicians but clearly Timberlake and his team did not see those very specific quotes

@@@  Scott McReery: In Between (N/A, 2018)  A new country arena rock single off the Apple Music hot tracks section.  It’s an autobiographical track where he talks about who he is — he’s blue collar but he’s sensitive and he likes to party and you know he’s just a great white man.  One I would be jealous of being.  He ain’t all holy water nor Jim Beam — that’s actually a good line.  The music is pretty awful and the whole vibe of the track is humorless.  I don’t know if he’s buying what he’s selling but I’m thinking it’s a well manicured grilled cheese sandwich.

@@@ Dua Lipa: IDGAF (N/A, 2018) Also off the Apple Music hot tracks section — it opens up with restrained guitar vamp but brings in the huge Brazilian sounding drum corp before settling into an uplifting and meaningful rock tune.  Pop rock, no power chords and a huge vocal arrangement.  Wow, 75 million streams on the GooglePimpTube, I’m not a mainstream listener at all.  I get why people might attach to the tune — the vocals go from normal in the verse into this big explosive.  It’s also a female empowerment tune as her man has been out on the town with other ladies and Dua Lipa is not fucking having it at all.  IDGAF — I Don’t Give A Fuck — that’s why it has 75 million views.

@@@ Django Django: Marble Skies (Ribbon Music, 2018)  I got to this record via a promo email from Line of Best Fit.  The first tune, the title track, takes a straight angular krautrock rhythm section and puts a lot of pretty vocals on top of it.  You get some contrast with the urgency of the rhythm section and the purdy boy vocals.  You get a weak white indie drum machine dancehall beat and a guest vocalist ont he second track.  It’s the basic formula of the opener with a tad (and I mean a tad) of booty shaking.  It’s like Devo and the Beach Boys had a love child.

@@@ Hookworms: Microshift (Domino, 2018) Also off the Line of Best Fit promo email this week.  We go further into chopped up drum machine/synth bass land which makes sense as this record is out on Domino and Domino is unafraid to throw down some weirdness.  A band appears from the nerdy lunarscape and it’s rocking in its own way.  The singer appears to have a little passion and he’s going synth rock nutty pants a bit.  The second tune dispenses with the dark electronic sounds and gets into some uplifting synth rocking.  Happy hipsters by happy hipsters for happy hipsters….

Music for 1/18/18!!! Mae Muller, Courtney Marie Andrews, Che Lingo

@@@ Mae Muller: Jenny (N/A, 2018)  Some white Brit girl hip hop/soul/r&b off the Tracks of the Week at Line of Best Fit.  The sounds are all right, medium funky and coherent, but I find Muller’s quasi-rhyming to be a tad clunky.  Fish and chips clunky.  She’s upset her man has a series of gals across the town but that doesn’t mean I have to suffer some C+ microphone work, does it?

@@@ Courtney Marie Andrews: May Your Kindness Remain (Fat Possum, 2018)  Also off Tracks of the Week.  It’s old school gospel tinged hippie rock with some Hammond B3 organ for her to sing over and a background vocal choir at certain points.  I dig the big guitar solo that appears and changes the vibe of the tune.  Andrews has a good voice but I could use a better vocal hook myself.  The tune climaxes 30 seconds from the end which I dig.

@@@ Che Lingo: Same Energy (N/A, 2018)  Also off the Tracks of the Week.  Nice hi hat skitter and big booty bass oozing underneath.  I’m hearing some British accent on one of these MCs and I thought I heard somebody toss the word ‘grime’ so it’s looking like some across the ocean hip hop.  I like it better than a lot of UK hip hop I’ve heard recently.  The MC has good microphone bounce which boosts the energy of the track instead of a lot of cough syrup rhyming you hear out there.  Keep that same energy, it’s all right.

Music for 1/15/18!!! Imarhan, Da Cruz, Sly and Robbie meet Dubmatix

@@@ Imarhan: Azzaman (City Slang, 2018) Off this week’s WRIR playlist email.  I still can’t get the Apple Music working on my PC and I’m having computer troubles with various machines so I’m stuck with GoogleTube quality.  This tune is a slinky West African rocker with a plethora of backing vocals.  I’m betting there’s gonna be a fat guitar solo up in this track.  Right on time with a little delay and some fuzz.  It’s a solid track without being super memorable.

@@@ Da Cruz: Virose (Broken Silence, 2018)  Also off this week’s WRIR playlist email.  An updated reggae roots sound out of Brazil — fat synth basslines and a tight snare sound.  I’m no roots purist and the bassline is poppin’ for sure.  The female singer is rhythmically on point and there’s some synth candy and delays to dub it out further.  It’s also a solid track without making me jump up and down.

@@@ Sly and Robbie meet Dubmatix: Dictionary (Echo Beach, 2018)  It’s world music day here at Deep in the Music.  And if you don’t know WRIR in Virginia is one of the best world music stations in the U.S.  Trump tunes in when he’s looking to hear music from the shitholes.  It’s true!  This tune is a mash of hip hop and big beat — at least that’s what I hear.  Not a straight roots vibe to the arrangement either but it’s got an edge and tightness to it that I like.  Some mangled vocal samples and siren-y synths further spice up the proceedings.  This is the best of what I heard today.
