Music for 8/13/18!!! Leon Vynehall, Arp, Sophie

@@@ Leon Vynehall: Nothing is Still (Ninja Tune, 2018) All three of these electronic tracks are off an email where the really great audio software company Izotope recommended 6 of their favorite electronic records of the year.  I really love great electronic and ambient music but I’m very picky about the sounds I like.  This first tune is spacious with some plinky, space traveller bleeps and a couple of slow moving clouds moving at a relaxed pace.  There is an orchestral melodic swell that builds under the ambient plinks.  The second tune evokes a jazz motif with a trumpet patch and an upright bass patch, both swizzled and fuzzed up for the kids today.  There’s a beat, just simple titch but it brings the piece into a different space.  I like this though it doesn’t move much after it establishes itself.  I sampled (pun alert!) a bit of the fourth and fifth tracks and it’s solid business.  If it was a bit more abstract I would be all over it.

@@@ Arp: Zebra (Mexican Summer, 2018)  This first tune opens up with some fluffy exhortations, a simple marimba melody, a fusion-y jazz bass and a periodic acoustic guitar strum.  Not some of my favorite sounds as they all come together for a sweet New Age salsa and I’m not an eater of that flavor.  The marimba makes an appearance at the opening of the second tune (as well as the bass sound) and this is aiming for a more playful and light space jazz kinda journey.  I’m good with space jazz and I will recommend Alice Coltrane all day long to whoever will listen but this is not my cup of sounds.

@@@ SOPHIE: Ponyboy (MSMSMSMS/Future Classic, 2018).  Glitchy, giddy and gorgeous — that is the blurb on Apple Music.  This is deeply female music businss with line like it’s okay to cry and other such beauteous sentiments in the first tune.  Surprisingly it has a little bit of Prince funk.  The second tune, Ponyboy, is a electronic funk throwdown still with Prince flavors which I dig.  I like a bunch of the sounds but not all of them, I like the adventurousness of the tunes, but I’m not a huge fan of her voice and her lyrics.  Others may totally be into her.  I’m pretty dead inside.

Music for 7/17/18!!! Luluc, Body/Head, Bjorn Toske

@@@ Luluc: Sculptor (Sub Pop, 2018) Indie folk off this week’s All Music notable release email.  This first tune is part ’70s hippie, a schmear of soft rock, a little James Taylor and big Beach Boys multi-tracked vocal production.  It’s a male/female vocal team and they have the schtick down.  There is both piano and organ as well as the acoustic guitars you would expect so it’s a full space child ensemble.  I don’t like the second tune as much.  It’s clipped below but I would recommend the first tune more and I’m enjoying this less the more I hear.  Okay I’m not lazy fuck I went and got the first tune from the GooglePimp — it’s all for your listening pleasure.

@@@ Body/Head: The Switch (Matador, 2018). Noise rock off this week’s All Music notable release email.  I’m hoping for a little punk rock head crushing but it’s hard to come by these days, the kids are too busy on the (f)instagram.  It opens up buzzy and feedback-ish and ominous.  Imma skeered.  It’s an 8 minute track but I would like them to exit this feedback flim flammery and take a swing at the baseball!  Ah female singer, dramatical has mad her entrance.  A few Sonic Youth pubes here but I’m still waiting for some outbreak/explosion, some action goddammit.  Fuck it,  I skipped ahead and I’m trapped in this same buzzy feedback traffic jam.  Red Bull, this shit needs some Red Bull.  Man, my interwebz player glitched out and it was the second track so I’m back to the first one but there is a similar wait all day attitude to the tune.  I wouldn’t go so far to say it’s boring but I wanted more.  Am I being selfish?  Only time will tell.

@@@ Bjorn Toske: Byen (Small Town Supersound, 2018) Left field house off this week’s All Music notable release email.  Left field house, not normal house, weirdo left field.  I don’t know what’s so odd about left field, it just seems like one of the ordinary baseball positions.  The first tune features a sample of a flock of seagulls — I shit you not.  The seagulls tip out and it assumes a quasi ethnic space groove.  It’s all right.  If Phish had a motherload of synthesizers it would sound like this tune.  Long and jammy, not particularly adventurous.  The sounds are very nice and arranged well.  After a synth-y intro the second tune explodes into a tight disco groove with some delayed piano.  I don’t love it.  The third tune is a similar formula with a slow synth and rhythm build.  As I said I don’t love this, it’s all right.  Not enough funk and action for me.

Music for 9/22/17!!! Darius Rucker, Avey Tare, Ritual, Daphni

@@@ Darius Rucker: Don’t (Capitol Nashville, 2017)  Friggin’ Hootie is back — I know he’s huge with the new country crowd but honestly I wouldn’t wipe my ass with some of this new country music.  It’s so fucking cornball, what the fuck?  This is off an upcoming full length.  Now Hootie is different, well not really as he was in a band called Hootie and the Blowfish.  That’s tough to live with.  Is it my imagine or does Rucker look like Dave Chappelle in this video clipped below.  I would love to hear the country lyrics of a tune written by Dave Chappelle as I’m sure they would be way less ernest and more entertaining!  It’s pretty standard, I know these lyrics are standard for the genre but it’s just baby food.  I thought we were adults here.  Oh Hootie we hardly knew ye.

@@@  Avey Tare: Eucalyptus (Domino, 2017)  An experimental rock record from the Domino imprint in the UK.  This first tune is lo fi and ambient and indie all in one sandwich.  It’s not somber, it’s more trippy and inward sounding but it’s low energy.  It also has a distinctly fish and chippy/British smell to it.  Let’s peep more.  It’s a dude and his guitar with a lot of weird ass garnish on these first two tunes.  Oh there’s a single drum but not a kit.  Not judging just describing.  This third tune, Ms. Secret, is the best of what I heard.  It’s still mad trippy but with more energy and melody.

@@@ Ritual: In this Moment (Roadrunner, 2017)  Metal off this late July All Music notable release email.  It’s opening up cinematically — regular readers know I hate the intros just get on with the skull crushing already for chrissakes.  Oh, I heard this during the summer, it’s a blues/ hard rock mix.  I don’t really like this formula but I’ll give the band some precious real estate on this blog which is a huge blog so this space is mad valuable.  Ha!

@@@ Daphni: Hey Drum (Dan Snaith, 2017)  I was looking for a record by these guys but alls I got was this single.  It’s house music with some bass that barely registers on my headphones.  I like the arrangement but he’s wearing the fuck out of this ‘hey drum’ vocal sample.  Oy, over and over I feel like I’m at Guantanamo Bay.  Oh, he broke from it, great.  And we’re back after a little house keyboard break.  Oh Jesus I want to kill him or me — I can’t decide.  I made it to just shy of 4 minutes and he’s busted out into a very funky club groove.  He shoulda cut the shit on the hey drum, edit the fuck out of that and get on with the funk.  Ah well.
