Music for 3/7/22!!!! Nilufer Yanya, Blood Incantation

@@@ Nilufer Yanya: anotherlife ( ATO, 2022) I got to this track via Line of Best Fit. This is the last track on the record and whoever produced it took the Led Zeppelin big roomy drum sound and threw some pop sauce over the top. Creative? Yes! Effective, not sure. The rest of the sounds are so soft, especially the guitar tones that the drums sound very alone. Yanya is the vocalist and she’s got a noodly flow, she’s not a diva, not that she can’t she just isn’t in this track. I’m going to briefly check out another track as this is the last track on the album and feels that way, it’s got a loose, outro jammy feel to it. No shame in that but I’d like to hear something more focused. I’m checking out the opener, the dealer, and it’s the same washed out guitar sounds and the same live popping drum sound. I say get out the distortion box and get on up and ride. At least a little. Just before I tip they threw a grizzly bass tone in there and it works just as I predicted. It balances the whole jam out for me.

@@@ Blood Incantation: Timewave (Century Media, 2022) I got to this metal record via Pitchfork’s 10 most reviewed albums of the week. I thought this was going to be a metal release, and it still might be but it opens as a dark swelling ambient thing. It sports a distinctly sci-fi deep space movie vibe and that’s fine. Very long vortex-y tones, low rumblers, the classics and shit. I’m onto the second track and an arpeggiating synth and a ping locator tone make an appearance and I remain in the same place: it’s cool but not the most engaging dark ambient I’ve heard. A little more chaos and some more engaging slow action would work better for me.
