Music for 6/2/19!!! Xinobi, Buffalo Blanco

@@@ Xinobi: Piano lessons (Discotexas, 2019)  I saw this artist on a gig poster that was posted up on the Twatter.  I love the Twatter.  Opens up four on the floor with a piano vamp and what I would call a whipping type sample.  You will know what I mean if you peep the track.  The piano part is the lead melodic instrument and it’s a bit of a simple melody.  I could use more energy or something a tad more dissonant and rougher fitting.  About halfway through the piano recedes, well no a synth is added (as well as a synthesized/processed vocal and at its peak its a pumping piano/synth/vocal dancefloor banger.  I’ve come to realize that the reason I like guitar in these types of tracks because they lend an organic roughness to the superstructured rhythms.  I like it but it’s too smooth and too predictable for me.

@@@ Buffalo Blanco: Anos Viejos (Atlas 32, 2017)  On the same Twatter posted gig poster. The first tune is super melodic almost proggy track but it’s got solid non-nerd energy.  Lyrics in Spanish it does straddle Death Cab for Cutie and old ass prog music.  This is not some dumbass frat brother rock, these guys are aspirational with an epic vibe to the compositions and the sounds they chose.  They are neither full rocking nor full soft serve ice cream.  I like it.  A few synths here and there but mostly guitars and sophisticated vocal arrangements.

Music for 1/9/19!!! Christine and the Queens, Brandi Carlyle

@@@ Christine and the Queens: Chris (Because Music, 2018). This record has been all over the best of 2018 lists. The record is funkier than a typical Madonna record, she sings a bit better than record and it has a dash of Prince in it. The production is outstanding — clean and balanced with sounds rooted in the ’80s. The Madonna flavors are even more apparent in the second tune, Girlfriend. I am agnostic on the singer — she’s solid but there hasn’t been a moment where I thought: wow she is tearing this tune to pieces. She’s no black diva, Whitney Houston, She’s raining men lady and she has a pretty limited range. She’s average to above average but it’s the identity politics in the lyrics that are most likely blowing this record up in every gay/lesbian bar in the world. Not that it’s not for the straights, it’s just primarily for the LGBT crowd.

@@@ Brandi Carlisle: By the Way I Forgive You (Warner, 2018). A country singer/songwriter record also off the NPR list (like the Christine and the Queens record above.) I’m not sure if I’ve heard her before but she sounds remarkably like Emmylou Harris with a similar record sound. The second tune, The Joke, is a piano ballad and I’m finding maybe there’s a bit too much reverb on the singer’s voice. I like the opener more and it’s a tad arena rock-y for my taste. The third tune is more uptempo and a rocking style so it’s gonna be a full spectrum country record which is fine. The third tune also explodes into an Irish bar sing-a-long shout-a-long which you would find on a Chumbawumba record so that pretty much punches my ticket out of town. I don’t hate it, it’s just not for me.

Music for 4/4/18!!! Pion, Kassandra, Thandii, Hilary Woods

@@@ Pion: Sympacide (Entreprise, 2018)  Greetings scenesters, scumbags, wannabes, and awful people pretending to be otherwise.  Today’s listening is from the tracks of the week at Line of Best Fit.  You know it, you love it.  This is a quirky dancefloor banger with a French singer.  So he may be Canadian trash or he might be genuine French trash!  I kid, I kid.  This is art school dance music as it prides itself on mixing in all sorts of sounds — a little old school, a little industrial, a little chill lounge, you get the idea.  It certainly is not committed to a four on the floor groove and it jumps around pretty good for a dance track.  It’s hard to explain the mix but here we have an interwebz video for your consumption pleasure.

@@@ Kassandra: No Longer Lovers (Manifesto, 2018)  More dance music but more on the r&b/urban side of things.  A very sophisto keyboard bass and some breathy, dare we say nigh on orgasmic singing.  The title of the song is No Longer Lovers but the vocal hook is ‘I woke up a warrior’.  I’m sure the two lines are related but I can’t explain how they may be.  I like most of the sounds but not all, there’s even a couple of sounds I find grating and counterproductive.  More sound than song as far as I’m concerned.

@@@ Thandii: Alkaline (Thanii, 2018)  From the same Line of Best Fit track of the week.  The singer in the picture of the video clipped below is decidedly retro and there’s a tad of retro vibe to the tune while there’s also indie electronic sounds abounding about.  I like the bass sound and the bassline and the trippy/phased guitars not as much.  I have no clue what the tune is about, something to do with the word alkaline.  It’s a dreamy wisp of a tune, a tad unfocused to my ears.

@@@ Hilary Woods: Inhaler (Sacred Bones, 2018). A pre-release single off an upcoming full length.  After a dark intro it segues into a piano driven slow tune.  When Woods enters the track vocally it’s in a dreamy super reverb-y kinda way.  It’s an uber female kinda track with deep feelings and resonance — something a foul monkey such as I can not appreciate.  We are to bathe in these big sounds — cloudy synths and multitracked vocals over a simple beat.  Simple because it’s serious and serious because it’s meaningful.

Music for 11/6/17!!! Diamante Electrico, Mr. Lif & Brass Menazeri, The Illustrious Blacks

@@@ Diamante Eléctrico: Dias Raros (ft. Billy Gibbons) (Mercado Negro, 2017)  I saw this artist on the WRIR weekly email.  I guess he’s a guitar hero and he’s joined on this track by ZZ Top’s own Billy Gibbons, a great guitarist in his own right.  The song sound a whole lot like a ZZ Top track sung in Spanish — a straight rock beat and a straight rock bass, and Billy Gibbons.  Where’s my shred?  You get a little riff break down, rhythmic in nature but no shred.  Two guitar heroes and no shred?  I came for the guitar shred and all I got was a few riffs.

@@@ Mr. Lif & Brass Menazeri: Resilient  (Waxsimile, 2017) Imma have to look up the whereabouts of the musicians in this single off the WRIR weekly email.  I can’t see from the website where the Balkan sounding band is from but the MC is from Boston.  It’s an interesting mash to have an acoustic band behind a MC — rolling snare and a lot of sinuous horn lines.  The band does well in providing a base but I wish the MC had more energy and flavor.  For some reason the single they put up on Apple Music is not available on the GooglePimp.  Weird.

@@@ The Illustrious Blacks: Neo Afro Futuristic Psychedelic Surrealistic Hippy EP (Concierge, 2017)  A blend of Flashlight-era George Clinton and ’90s Dee Lite dance floor funk that I got to via a Flavorpill promo email.  And a bit of Prince as well.   There are four tunes on this EP and I’m on the fourth one and I recommend the first track and then tip after that.  The opening track is posted below.

New music listening Thurs March 29, 2012

@@@ Madonna: MDNA.  I like the production, but the recording engineers have chopped all the low end out of her voice (because she can’t sing) and she sounds 12 years old.  Her songwriting remains focused more on spectacle and shock rather than, well, songs.

@@@  Georgia Ann Muldrew: Seeds.  Dense arrangements dating back to early ’70s soul.  The arrangements surpass the songs.  This music is a Curtis Mayfield thing with a twist of Stevie Wonder but fronted by a woman. I like the loose flow of the tunes, but I think the lyrics are somewhat cliche.  If there were some unique vocal sentiments on this record I would be jumping up and down, but the lyrical average-ness does not take you higher.
