Music for 6/25/22!!! Hypermass, Mutilatred

@@@ Hypermass: Hivemind (Hypermass, 2022) Very hard rock production here but they do bring the energy and some metal features to their music. The singer traffics in the various metal singing modes and the drummer is amped the fuck up and it’s quite inspiring. I’m on the fifth track and it’s the same formula, ramped hard rock with an insane drummer. I guess a lot of folks would experience this as metal but the super manicured production makes me feel it’s more in the hard rock spirit. Personal preference, no need to beef over aesthetics.

@@@ Mutilatred: Determined to Rot (Self released, 2022) Oh my, this is some filthy ass fully melted down death metal. Tons of static, a breakneck pace, a caveman singer and just a face full of antisocial energy. This feels like watching someone have an uncontrollable medical breakdown, a fit or a stroke or heart attack. Fuck!!! There’s a grinding, ka-chunky sameness to the first three tracks I’ve peeped and yeah if you’re feeling this way just keep circling back on it like picking a scab. Big ups to the drummer, yowsa he’s getting a workout.

Music for 1/3/22!!! Trivium, Beartooth

@@@ Trivium: In the Court of the Dragon (Roadrunner, 2021) I’m returning to the metalcore best of ’21 lists as the Pupil Slicer record (which I highly recommend) has reinvigorated my search for metal. This is the title track of the record and it’s less of a hit for me as it sports more of a classic metal flow and I’ve never cottoned to the co-mingling of midieval themes and metal, I think’s it’s mad cornball. Not this one, but the concept. When he gets to the sung vocal hook ‘In the Court of the Dragon’ I feel like I”m in a Dungeons and Dragons game which I’ve desperately avoided for my whole life. Let’s move on unless you dig these feels.

@@@ Beartooth: Below (Red Bull Records, 2021) Fucking Red Bull records everybody denounce Red Bull, it’s fucking poison. Outside of that this is the opening track and it opens chaotic and simultaneously riffy. A pube of cock rock to be sure mostly in the singer and the guitar riffage. The chorus is meh, a tad butter-ish before they return to the crunch of the verse. This is for the dudes for sure, leather pants, hoisting a Red Bull on stage then pissing it out all over the crowd. Go Red Bull, fuck Red Bull, somebody get me a Red Bull!!!!

Music for 8/18/21!!! Tony Monaco, The Crown

@@@ Tony Monaco: Root Down (Chicken Coup Records, 2021) I saw this up on the Twatter and it’s slotted as jazz on Apple Music but to my ears it’s sneaking in the door of jazz and belongs in the Meters’ funk part of town. Very modern recording style with guitar, organ, and drums. I’m pretty sure there’s no bassist here and the organ is holding it down, it’s a bit unclear to my ears. It’s a funky and friendly thing they have going here, nothing particularly groundbreaking in its formula but great music to bbq some tofu?

@@@ The Crown: Royal Destroyer (Metal Blade, 2021) I realized over the weekend that I haven’t been getting my fill of heavy metal. In the age of the interwebz that’s not a hard situation to remedy. I found this track on a list with a bunch of duds but this is quite a beatdown. And if the idea of a beatdown seems odd, the second title is ‘Let the Hammering Begin!’ Well played. It’s an updated classic metal sound which I don’t usually enjoy but this has a certain aggro vibe that really animates the proceedings. I’ve attached the third tune ‘Motordeath’ and it’s got a most excellent guitar sound and very tasty thrash drumming. I like the singer and that’s rare for me in heavy metal.

Music for 11/2/20!!! Oneohtrix Point Never, Ane Brun, DragonForce, Andrew Cushin

@@@ Oneohtrix Point Never: Long Road Home (Warp, 2020) This gent has mad arranging skills. He killed it in the Safdie brothers flick about a dude and his brother, extremely effective and disturning electronic music. This has a singer, which is a negative for me and it seems like a move to get famous, f’real. Or to break through more, as it embraces computer pop while glitching the fuck here and there. His mixes are like ginger ale, popping and multilayered. While I get the sonic candy I don’t find myself super moved. I find myself impressed but not emotionally accessed. Since I’m a big fan of this musician I’m going to check out a few other tracks. On I Don’t Love Me Anymore he remains in the pop space with a pleasantly crowded mix. I like it better than the tune clipped below but he’s definitely taken a different approach on this record and I think I prefer the dark business. I’d like to hear less singing — I’m not sure taking full vocal lines and putthing them into a vocal synthesizer or other plugs is particularly fresh.

@@@ Ane Brun: After the Great Storm (Universal, 2020) This is from this week’s Line of Best Fit and it’s on a major label and from the cover and the picture below I think we’re set for some meaningful Kate Bush style sensitive ambient rock. There’s a rotating synth sound that is very organic and hooky that spins in the tune. It is a focal point for the track. I like the arrangement and a bunch of the sounds. I don’t hate her vocalizing but I’m not moved by it personally. It’s ‘gina as Trump would say! I have nothing against over femininity but I’m more of a PJ Harvey female rage kinda fella. I feel like I should be curled up with a good book and some flavored coffee while this is spinning. It fills up with sounds as it moves on, most notably with some string arrangements that I both like and don’t like. They’re well done but the mood they convey plays into this idea of female sophistication. That synth/guitar arpeggio-spinning thing is hype!

@@@ DragonForce: Highway to Oblivion (Metal Blade, 2019) From a record entitled Extreme Power Metal. It’s not extreme metal, it’s not power metal, it’s extreme power metal!!!! Deal with it and horns up ya shittaz. Let’s be clear from the beginning, this is not a highway to hell, it’s a highway to oblivion. Big difference. Oh my, this clicks on and it’s just a glorious example of cheese metal, this is some Disney shit from the sonics to the lyrics to the feels. Momma stand back so you don’t get cheese splattered on your shoes or your face. Glorious, glorious, glorious, this is so extremely cheesy you just go with it and enjoy the cartoon Disney aspect. Maybe on your headphones but I wouldn’t rock this is a group, it might be a bit embarrassing. Synth sounds, little bits of metal shreds thrown off as sparks, crazy ass drumming all delivered with a smile. This is Extreme Cheese Metal they got one of the words wrong! It’s almost 7 minutes long and I rocked just over 3, that’s pretty good.

@@@ Andrew Cushin: Where’s My Family Gone (UMG, 2020) I don’t know if this is the track where the Oasis duder shows up but this young UK gent is on this week’s Line of Best Fit email and he’s doing a sensitive alienated Brit rock thing. A little crooning with the mix dominated by vocal melodies and the drums. There is some guitar work and keyboard happening but it’s tucked back a bit. He wants to know where it went wrong, where you changed your song, what went wrong, I want to know where’s my family gone? Then a guitar solo, duh, and a peak in the energy. Without some more specifics regarding his family and what went wrong I can’t really comment on his situation. It’s dramatical, that’s dramatic with an -al on the end but it has a vagueness that say a classic Brit rock alienated youth in Quadrophenia wouldn’t be rocking.

Music for 10/2/20!!! Anna Von Hausswolff, A Certain Ration, Sufjan Stevens, The Ocean

@@@ Anna von Hausswolff: All Thoughts Fly (Southern Lord, 2020) I’m a big Southern Lord fan and urge other folks to check out their releases. This is a 12 minute banger and it opens up Bach-y and church-y but 12 minute bangers can take you on a journey for sure and who knows where it might go. It looks like they’re going for that lucrative ambient listening neighborhood as this continues along a solo instrumental/processed path. I like it all right, as ambient music it’s cool without blowing my mind. Unlike other Southern Lord releases there’s a certain conservatism to the aesthetic here. It’s a lot of arpeggios and tremolo like effects and I guess I was hoping for more. It’s nice background music to doom scroll during a pandemic but I like to be challenged by my ambient music. Around 8 minutes in we get to a crescendo and it’s cool.

@@@ A Certain Ration: Always In Love (Mute, 2020) Slotted as alternative, I’m a bit surprised to see this out on Mute. It’s electro pop that is both sickly sweet and sonically flaccid. Intimate vocals, some electro garnish, white boy janky guitar and frat rock drumming, oh lord I wish this heavily influenced by ’80s biscuit dropping was buried alongside Ronald Reagan. I guess I’m the freak here as I don’t know how this superficially emotive track works for people, it has so little substance it’s a tad scary.

@@@ Sufjan Stevens: The Ascension (Asthmatic Kitty, 2020) This record by an indie darling has been getting pushed in various spots on the interwebz. I’ve never really cottoned to Stevens and what I’m hearing in the 14th track and title track to the record doesn’t change my feeling. It’s a pretty massive slice of indie New Age electro biscuitry with overwrought production. I love emo punk and I love it for the contrast of extreme confesssion over the storm of fully unhinged punk rock . He’s denounced his own selfishness but in a pretty self absorbed manner, blech. Prophesies, pantomimes and sonically beautiful. I think this sort of introspection is not aligned to with real life when painful shit is encountered and acknowledged it’s not a gorgeous soundscape, it’s draining and very difficult. Oh I protest this on the ground of fostering illusion and setting back the idea of real inward acceptance. Blech, boo hiss.

@@@ The Ocean: Phanerozoic II: Mesozoic/Cenozoic (Metal Blade, 2020) A record epic in scope spanning the life and periods of our planet. I will be checking out the opening track Triassic — it opens with some strat-y sound guitar strums and a tad of flute. The rhythm section appears and it’s a jaunty heavy rock opening but I do anticipate a classic metal explosion right around the corner. I like the bass player and his/her tone — grizzy and melodic for a metal player. Oooh, pressure is building and the giant metal sphincter is about to open up and spill! Right at 3 minutes the shit hits the listeners’ ears and then back to the gentler verse. The production is manicured as neatly as hair in porn flix. It’s a chill/explode, chill/explode pattern they’re working and it’s a classic though they’re stretching it with these long song lengths. I wish the sounds here weren’t so tightly controlled but a lot of folks find that exciting, the super trimmed and polished thing. I like some of these repeating guitar melodies, they’re spice shit up.

Music for 3/23/20!!! Krallice, Dodenbezweerder, Aodon, Velnias, Katatonia

***Let’s give a shout of respect to Bandcamp which offers a great home to heavy metal/dark music artists, as well as other musicians.  They’ve shown that they’re an ethical outfit, let’s support them***

@@@ Krallice: The Wheel (N/A, 2020)  Today we’re listening off Invisible Oranges’ front page.  The energy here is high but what’s most notable is the jumping around, it’s got a bit of technical/prog flow.  I dig the unpredictability of it, I like to be kept on my toes.  As the tune winds on it does get more geeky and circular in its manic shredding

@@@ Dodenbezweerder: Nachtilijke (N/A, 2019)  Super ambient shitstorm heavy music also off Invisible Oranges.  Big waves of spacious distortion and a bit of recognizable cymbal.  It’s really quite fitting for the moment.  The singer is something out of the Bible but his orc-estrations (get it, do you get it, the pun that is??) are lost to the giant reverb as well.  It’s really quite beautiful in its way.  Check that out, it’s give you the feels.

@@@ Aodon: Les Rayons (N/A, 2020)  More traditional metal in its aggressive posture.  After a big intro it gets into a straight up dome crushing thrash thing.  Big guitars, immaculate production and a boatload of anguish.  As always I find it a bit odd to be listen to other folks’ suffering presented in such a manicured fashion but that’s the thrill, I didn’t invent it I just peep it.

@@@ Velnias: Aurora Rune (N/A, 2020) Off their new record Scion of Aether (Extremely regal title!) and the tune opens up sludge-y and blunted.  As in weed.  It then moves into a loping gait with some ascending guitar melodies but not a massive distorted sound, a reasonable sounding guitar.  This is a 9 minute biscuit so it’s gonna stomp out of the gate slowly and not light on its feet.  When the singer comes in big and church-y you might think this tune could be on Frodo’s iPod and shit.  Think epic journey and melodic at that.  I like it just fine but I’m not up for the full journey.

@@@ Katatonia: City of Burials  (N/A, 2020) Our last listen of the day, sad face!  It’s an updated classic metal sound and wow, it’s really classic metal, forged here in 2019/2020.  Big drums, big power chords, big vocal melodies and a little boogie thrown in.  Massive guitar shred up in there.  I don’t really buy this combination of sounds for myself but they’re working it fo sho!

Music for 2/28/20!!! Body Count, Cirith Angol, Exhorder, Hatebreed, Lucifer

Body Count: Bum Rush (Century Media, 2020) Big Body Count fan over here and this one will raise your blood pressure.  Megadeth flavored but with rhythm on the microphone and ramped up a whole bunch.  This is a very energetic first (pre-release) single and I would definitely listen to more of this record.  The vocals drive the tune as the musical elements are pretty familiar but it comes together as a track with Ice T driving the bus.

@@@ Cirith Angol: Legions Arise (Metal Blade, 2020) More classic metal with a dramatic singer.  Plenty of energy here but it’s going for a more epic vibe than the rampaging Body Count tune.   Big melodic guitar playing, I like the drummer but it’s not my cup of metal!  Also a pre-release single off an upcoming full length.

@@@ Exhorder: The Man that Never Was (Nuclear blast, 2020)  Kinda boogie metal with some really elaborate guitar riffage and a lot of spraying drums.  The singer is half operatic and half rock star.  It’s all about the riffs, shreds and drums here.  Not really my cup of metal either.

@@@ Hatebreed: When the Blade Drops (Metal Blade, 2020)  A bunch of metal flavors here — a little hardcore, some stomping metal and a lot of metaphors regarding the guillotine.  There’s nothing you can do to stop it, drop the blade.  Plenty of hostility without a full meltdown.

@@@ Lucifer: Midnight Phantom (Century, 2020)  If you want a little glam to go with your metal here ya go.  This isn’t metal per se, it’s a rocking track with a female singer wooing the dark fellas.  Some mildly crunchy and contained guitars here but the intent is much different.  This is something you might hear at a Halloween party.  Melodies, singing, hooks and structure.  I like it all right.

Music for 1/30/20!!! Spirit Adrift, Aldous Harding, Inter Arma

SpiritAdrift

Off Vice’s best of 2019.  Ramped up classic metal on this first tune, We Will Not Die.  I like some of the grunge/punk influence on the second tune, Divided By Darkness, but classic metal isn’t my thing.  It’s very well executed with a manicured but not uptight production style.  Driving riffage, soaring singer, etc, you know the drill.

AldousHarding

Singer songwriter business on the 4AD label is probably not going to be my thing, but I have open ears and am honest.  Unlike the vast majority of music reviewers.  It opens up with a classic indie rock/Velvet Underground type of thing though she does bust out with a very pleasing vocal arrangement in the chorus.  At it’s core it’s an indie guitar record but she burnishes it with FM rock flourishes and newer indie sounds.  The songs do jump around vibe wise but they’re not too disparate.  I’m not a huge fan of the formula but there are some really nice moments here — the flute/woodwind part on the third tune Zoo Eyes is a notable ear catcher.

Inter Arma

More metal off Vice’s best of 2019.  If this first tune is any indicator this is going to be a sludgier, possibly more Satanic affair.  Hail Satan!  (great documentary, check it out)  After some detuned business it gets into a 7 minute shot of frog stomping and exploration of the recessed folds of Donald Trump’s anus.  The areas his staff doesn’t even lick.  Don’t come to this record looking for vocal melodies as a caveman has risen from the grave to hold the microphone.  I dig the drummer here, he’s got some epicness going on.  It could be from repeated shots of Red Bull into his eyes, but enjoy it in the face of that self abuse.

Music for 1/13/20!!! Woodhawk, ZONAL, The Cavemen, Wolfbrigade, Red Death, Warsenal, Flatbed

Today we’re listening off this week’s CFUV playlist email in the loud section — punk, noise, heavy metal.

CFUV_Loud_Jan7

Stoner metal out of Canada.  Retro, riffy with a classic 1970’s type singer.  Big Arena Rock energy if you’re in for it.

Out on Relapse with Moor Mother on an electronic record.  Bold!  I think the first tune is a bit sleepy but the second one brings a beat and more rhythmic spoken word work from Moor Mother.  System Error, track 3, brings the full energy and I dig it.  Check that out!

Classic revved up punk-a-billy.  I liked the first tune, Snakeskin, the best of what I heard.

Punky metal out of Sweden on Southern Lord, one of my favorite labels.  A slightly polished update Motorhead kind of thing.

Metal out of Washington DC.  Muscular classic business, shreddy with a punk style singer.  Track 3, Sword without a Sheath, is the best of what I heard.

Classic metal/thrash out of Montreal.  Track 3 Lords of Rifftown, say no more.

Noisy hard rock.

Music for 3/27/19!!! PNB Rock, Cold Showers, Rotting Christ

@@@ PNB Rock:  I Like Girls (WEA, 2019)  A celebration of lesbian love, or at least of dudes watching girls go at it.  It’s a pretty low IQ hook for a tune but they’re going for it!  He goes to the club with a girl who likes girls and the weed comes out and some girls end up getting raw with each other.  The chorus is the worst because the melody is recycled.  I’m betting PNB Rock wouldn’t be up for watching big bull dykes go at it but if he celebrated that I would give him some respect.  He’s a pussy — he only like lipstick lesbians, what a unrough bitch.

@@@  Cold Showers: Faith (N/A, 2019)  A lead single from a record due out on May 24th and I got to this via a music publicist.  It’s super rooted in ’80s synth/guitar rock.  I appreciate the drum part the most and the singer’s Depeche Mode vocalizing style the least.  It’s a muscular Cure track without the cleverness of the bummer Cure dude.  I appreciate the energy but the track could use some flash in my dumbass opinion.

@@@  Rotting Christ: The Heretics (Self-released, 2019)  A metal record off this week’s CFUV playlist email.  From the spoken word intro to the vibe of the sounds it appears to be an ambitious record questioning man’s relationship to God and I”m betting more specifically the Christian God (see funny hat below!).  The sounds are solidly classic arena metal, and the playing is mostly classic metal with some touches of thrash, and some Christian choir group action.  I don’t think these guys are American and I’m guessing, no wait let me Google these bitches.  Wow, a Greek metal band that goes back to 1987!  They are classic metal incarnate.  They’ve run a race Motley Crue gave up so they could sit at home and play with fake boobs and masturbate in bus stations.  It’s not my style but I give props for longevity.
