Los Texmaniacs: Cruzando Borders (Smithsonian Folkways, 2018)

What a timely recommendation as Trump and his ill bitch pieces of shit like Jeff Sessions continue to separate immigrant families from their children.  However, let us not let those ignorant heathens ruin what is an awesome record.

This is a beautiful and super musical record regardless of the politics involved here.  I’m particularly impressed with the accordion player but I’m super into accordion but everybody in this band plays and sings at a super high level.

There are songs about being deported and about not being recognized as a human but that’s for folks to check out.

On this blog we love Pusha T and we roll with awesome groups like Los Texmaniacs.  So if you’re not a racist punkass feel free to check out some awesome American music.

Music for 6/15/18!!! Ruby Karinto, Heron, Pharis and Jason Romero

@@@ Ruby Karinto: Ruby Karinto (HoZac, 2018)  I got to this Canadian indie rock record via this week’s CFUV playlist email.  It opens uptempo with some steady rock drumming and I think they’re rocking lyrics in Japanese.  I better look that shit up, I don’t want to confuse my Asian nations.  Whew, I confirmed the singer is Japanese and the rest of the band appear to be boring white people.  This is what I thought indie rock is supposed to be — weird ass rock by freaks, not tight jeans posing hipster nonsense.  I think I prefer singers in foreign languages and this young Japanese lady has shit going on.  While she’s out front, the rest of the band is doing solid if not weird work behind her.  I’m feeling the drummer, the synth player shooting squiggles all over the place and the bass player, well there’s not a lot of reward for being the bass player.  I’m going to put this record on my list for future listening.

@@@ Heron – A Low Winter’s Sun (Sludgelord) Also off this week’s CFUV playlist email.  It is a doom metal record that opens up with the tune ‘Of Gods and Goats’ so a little Satanic reference right out of the gate.  It’s a wall of rolling guitar distortion in this first track, you can really get lost in it.  I like this singer, he’s not your typical doomer, he sounds really pissed off.  I’m feeling this second tune as it is a nice blend of darker emotions — sadness, frustration, melancholy, it’s not one dimensional.  These are all hefty slabs of noise most getting up into the 7 minute area.  Good stuff, thinking man’s heavy music, check it out.

@@@ Pharis & Jason Romero – Sweet Old Religion (Lula) A roots/folk/blues kinda record also the CFUV weekly playlist email.  It’s centered around the vocal harmonies of male and female voices singing on top of two acoustic guitars.  Super pretty first tune.  There’s a full band on the second tune, but it’s still a super sweet affair so I’m guessing it’s gonna go like that all the way through.  The sounds are great, the singing is super beautiful so if you’re into the uplifting roots music these two will hook you up big time.

Music for 6/14/18!!! HTRK, Kids See Ghosts, Nicki Minaj, Tyler the Creator

@@@ HTRK: Mentions (Ghostly, 2018)  I saw this single get a shout on the Twatter so I threw a peep its way.  Depending on mood HTRK could be extrapolated as Hot Track or Hot Rock or maybe even Hat Rack.  It is a downtempo moody affair with some heavily delayed guitar, a female singer and an electronic beat with lots of bits of delay collaged to it.   It leans more Hat Rack than Hot Rock or Hot Track.  I find the singer a bit, well let’s just say she could use a coffee.  That’s not a criticism, just a suggestion.  The sounds are cool, it’s a slow groove flavor.

@@@ Kid Cudi & Kanye West:  4th Dimension (UMG, 2018)  I’m listening to this track because it says it features Louis Prima.  They put a sample at the front of the track but they only retain and chop up a vocal snippet embedded in the tune.  There are some ghoulish laughs in the middle of the tune which are kinda low IQ but it’s the beat and the vocal sample that drive it.  I don’t find the rhymes to be particularly compelling, they might be coded for white knuckleheads such as myself.

@@@ Nicki Minaj: Rich Sex (Cash Money Records, 2018)  Off the Apple Music hot tracks section.  I’m more than a bit fascinated by Nicki Minaj — she’s not a woman to be played with and has bigger balls than most male rappers.  That said, there are some ill sentiments up heah in this anthem to money and dick.  There’s not such thing as broke and handsome?  Oh my, that’s fucking offensive.  It’s a pretty driving rhythm and a gnarly ass bass but I can’t give much respect to her analysis of fucking broke dicks and the joy of rich sex.  No lectures, rhyme what you like but this kind of sentiment is exactly the same kind of shit El Trump-o traffics in — wealth over everything.

@@@ Tyler the Creator: 435 (Sony, 2018)  Well it has turned into a mainstream hip hop single listening day.  I’m a Tyler the Creator fan — he throws plenty of interesting weirdness into his mainstream hip hop.  Weird sounds as well.  It’s a 93 second track so there’s not too much to get worked up over.  On the site genius it says Tyler is frustrated he doesn’t get enough respect.  Snubbed is the word they use.  So that’s what the track is about.  It is more interesting to me how the hip hoppers have adopted a steady flow of singles going up on streaming services and have mostly abandoned whole records.  Even the righteously MAGA penis Kanye is shooting out all manner of EPs.  So it’s a case of a quick tidbit to feed the fans and keep the name out there rather than being the most interesting song.

Music for 6/13/18!!! Hungry March Band, Neko Case, Lush, Sly and Robbie

@@@ Hungry March Band: Running Through with the Sadness (Imaginator, 2018)   A pre-release single from an old school New York city institution.  I’m sort of done with the klezmer/jazz/Balkan business but these guys are like a mariachi band that know a lot of jazz and had a syringe full of Red Bull shot into their eyeball.  My favorite music is the stuff where the musicians sound like they don’t give a shit and are playing their asses off.  This is an example of that formula in action.  I will listen to more of this when it comes out and this is a pretty hot lead single.

@@@ Neko Case: Hold-on (Anti-, 2018)  From this week’s All Music notable release email.  This first tune does live up to its lush billing while it does purposely meander through a bunch of sections.  The second tune appears to be much more of a fm adult alternative ‘rocker’.  I know that there is an extremely ardent Neko Case fan club but without ramming a stick in there I’m having trouble understanding why they’re so ardent.  She’s a good singer but I don’t hear anything super extraordinary in the lyrics, the singing or the songwriting.  The music is pretty straightforward mostly soft fm radio rock.  For example, in the fifth tune Bad Luck the vocal hook is ‘chipped my tooth on an engagement ring’ so I guess that’s the kind of quirkiness that has gotten her a lot of fans.  God bless her for having fans that support her.

@@@ Lush: Snail Mail (Matador, 2018) Some debut singer songwriter action off this week’s All Music notable release email.  This young lady just graduated from high school so it looks like she’s got plenty of time to have the music business crush her soul!  I kid, I kid (not really).  After a bit of a intro sing and strum she gets into a full band retro indie from the ’90s kinda flavor.  Ms. Lush has a very nice voice, they put too much reverb on it.  Regular readers know what I think of the vast majority of indie guitar music — this is perfectly decent music in its slackness (and whiteness might I add) but I can’t really get with the vibe.  It’s the Velvet Underground, it’s Pavement, it’s Lou Reed, it’s the Feelies, it’s in that neighborhood.

@@@ Sly & Robbie, Nils Petter Molvaer, Elvind Arset, Vladislav Delay: Nordub (Sony Germany, 2018)  I saw this genre mashing record on the London Jazz news blog weekly email.  I don’t love the synths on the first track but the second track brings some fat dub low end and some vocals.  I’m digging this track over the opener.  I’m on the fourth tune and my feeling is that it’s differently ambient than traditional dub records, the rhythm section is pretty banging, but I did not find my attention riveted to the other elements besides Sly and Robbie.  It’s a bit sleepytime tea.

Music for 6/12/18!!! Chancha Via Circuito, ETRAN DE L’AIR, Walter Smith III

@@@ CHANCHA VIA CIRCUITO | Bienaventuranza (Wonderwheel, 2018)  A Latin music/electronica mash which seems to be kind of trendy these days.  I got to it via the WRIR weekly playlist email.  The first track opens up with some heavy drumming and high stringed instrument playing.  Super pretty and pretty standard as well as I have dozens of these types of records in my collection.  The production is going for an epic but not arena epic — more of a it’s a big world kind of sound.  I can’t say I love the production, it’s a tad too large for my taste.  I’m on the third tune and I think it’s a bit sleepy — there are electronic flourishes to be had but it’s not super integrated into the tunes as much more than a garnish for a Latin music record.  I like it but I could use more energy.

@@@ ETRAN DE L’AIR: No. 1 (Sahel Sounds, 2018)  I got to this African music record also off the WRIR weekly playlist email.  It’s got a pleasantly punk rock lo fi sound to the first tune with a couple of guitars going — one single line and the other rhythm — with a cracking and crushed drum kit going.  There are only three tunes up on the bandcamp for folks to check out but this is the kind of African business I can get with.  There is a bio on the bandcamp page so you can read about them if you want to know about their northern Niger roots and where they’re at.  This third tune, Tenere Maliat, is straight up smoking so don’t miss out on that.

@@@ Walter Smith III: Twio (Self-released, 2018). Off a twat from the Twatter by the twatter guy Bird is the Worm.  Some lushly produced straight jazz with sax, drums and bass as the main instrumentation (a couple of guest on a few tracks as well).  This is jazz for people with medium high paying jobs and really clean white teeth.  There’s nothing wrong with that but it’s prettiness is more obvious than it’s engaging improv (at least to my dumbass ears).  The sounds are all really nice, the playing is good and I’m sure there are a fair number of unadventurous listeners who might dig this.  I make no apologies for wanting to hear jazz cats go totally mental on their instruments.

Music for 6/11/18!!! Bob Moses, Punketronic, Orions Belte, Kid Cudi/Kanye West

@@@ Bob Moses: Heaven Only Knows (Domino, 2018)  I got to this newly released electronic track via music biz bigmouth Bob Lefsetz who shat his pants over it.  It may turn up in tempo later on in the tune but it opens with a stack of vocals and a lot of cheesy reverb.  Yikes, it has morphed into an ’80s pop ballad complete with gated snare and the most boring kick snare beat every.  Ah, the hallmark of white people — boring funkless beats!  If you have high cholesterol or any cardiovascular conditions steer clear of this cheese bomb.  It’s interesting the singer sounds a bit like the dude from Oasis but other than that I don’t have much interest.  I made it 2:30 before I had to bail.

@@@ Punketronic: Hello Mr. Moonlight (Paul Tronic, 2018)  I got to this rock single via the indie music blog Indiepulse.  It’s a midtempo guitar blaster, not full on more of a power pop thing with a vocal melody over a chord progresison.  It’s got some rockin’ to it but it’s pretty standard melodic rock business.  Not U2 righteous douchebaggery, more like a slack retro ’90s punk lite kinda thing.

@@@ Orions Belte: Atlantic Surfing (Jansen, 2018) Oy, more ’80s rock — who made the decision this was good music the first time around?  Oh boy, this is a 7.5 minute exploratory kind of thing that I will most likely only be attending a portion of.  All of the guitar jamming and swirling psychedelic business stuffed in the background unfolds over an urgent straight beat.  Skip to halfway through the song and start where the tambourine comes in.  I can’t think of a single tune ever where a tambourine didn’t improve a song or god forbid, take it to another level.  My personal opinion is if you want to listen to long instrumental pieces you should just check out some good jazz.  I know jazz is run by a bunch of complete and total douchebags but don’t blame the music for that.

@@@ Kanye West & Kid Cudi: Kids See Ghosts (Def Jam/UMG, 2018)  We might have to jettison the Kanye West solo pita pocket as it is not deserving of the track by track treatment.  I saw a review of this record over the weekend and this is the first track.  I think the vocal part that functions as a drum part is very interesting but the rhymes aren’t super stellar to my ear and the sounds are all right but not ear candy.  Pusha T kicks off the rhymes and I’m a fan though this isn’t as enjoyable to me as his recent solo stuff.  It’s an all right track, nothing to pull over by the side of the road to crank.

Music for 6/7/18!!! Deli Girls, Express Rising, Turnstile

@@@ Deli Girls: Evidence (Sweat Equity, 2018)  I saw a noise punk gig in NYC on the recent Flavorpill promo email and this female outfit was part of the show.  I like this first tune, Indentured Pervert.  It’s like Nine Inch Nails but with more balls and that’s ironic as it’s a clam bake/ladybitz outfit.  The lead singer is at the end of her rope and she’s supported by some righteously crunchy drums and aggro synth action.  There’s also a bunch of drum ‘n bass action going on here and the whole thing is super caffeinated and enraged.  I love the pissed off female music, it’s great.

@@@ Express Rising: Rope II (Numero, 2018) I got this sorta New Age-y epic indie electronic instrumental record via this week’s All Music notable release email.  It’s got a lot of elements I don’t prefer to have on records I listen to.  There’s some epic and slightly cheesy guitar sounds, string swells, and what I call meaningful piano playing.  Slow and ringing out but not really very interesting.  This is the sort of melancholy hipster music one would find in an apartment with a really feelings based dude wearing a thick sweater slowly drinking his flavored coffee and playing with his beard asking himself ‘where did it all go wrong?’

@@@ Turnstile: Time and Space (Roadrunner, 2018)  A retro hardcore record I got to via this week’s CFUV playlist email.  It’s got some Jane’s Addiction and some Quicksand up in there.  My first impression is that the record is very manicured in the production — I like a messy ass hardcore record but that’s just me.  It’s not strictly a hardcore record — it has a little boogie to it, some hard rock and even a couple of piano outros.  I’m not sure I dig the overall formula they’ve got going — it’s very pretty hardcore and I have trouble with that.  Plus it has some art school to it and I would prefer muscle to the art school genre mashing and production.  But hey, that’s just me and if it sounds like something you might be interested in have at it.  I would take the new Pusha T record over this.
