@@@ Cassie Wieland: Weeds (People Places Records, 2020) I saw this younger classical composer in the latest Roulette (BK adventurous music club) and then saw this recording. It opens with a lot of shushing (brushes on snares??) and a vibraphone playing singular notes. Weeds is a 7.5 minute piece and it’s pretty staid though what was periodic notes on the vibes has changed into a vibraphone with a delay pedal on it and a shower of pinging notes. The shushing has been shushed and it’s now two vibes players and right at 5 minutes we get a kit drummer and while I love vibes and the idea of two vibes players and a drummer the composition is too conservative for my taste. A wee bit of flow and fire would work here. Just a wee bit.
@@@ WizTheMc: For a Minute (NHMS, 2020) I saw this MC talking about music that lasts forever in the latest promo email from Happy Magazine out of Australia. If you think that an artist named WizTheMc would come out with hip hop stylings, you wouldn’t be sorely mistaken but you would be mistaken. It sounds like he took Andre 3000’s tune, the funky one, Hey Ya! and watered it down bigly with feel good sentiments and even more Taylor Swift pop feels than when Tay Tay ravaged this formula. It’s hard to say if Wiz does a better job than Tay Tay ‘recreating’ that track but I’m not sure I can summon the energy to make an informed decision on that. Ironically I have to go take a wiz.
@@@ Trippie Redd: Weeeee (1400 Entertainment, 2020) Also off Happy Magazine out of Australia. I don’t know if folks out there watch the animated show Archer but it’s been revealed on that show that Trippie Redd is cousin to Tripping Balls. Fun fact in a Trumpy world. Once again I’m listening bottom to top so this tune follows the 2 Chainz track which was quite stripped and funky. This tune mixes in a bunch of r&b and he goes from singing in places and rhyming in other places. The mix is much more filled out here with some wide panned guitar, some string flourishes here and there. I’m not sure what the goal of these sounds are, I guess he’s trying to fill a hip hop-rock star void. I’m on a second tune and it’s really a blend of hip hop, r&b and cheesy arena rock. Not really for me. Check out the cover for this record called Pegasus and his intentions are clear!
@@@ 2 Chainz: Quarantine Thick (Def Jam/UMG, 2020) A pretty hilarious depiction of trap life in Atlanta with 2 Chainz complaining how his girls’ hips got wide from snacking too much during the pandemic and a female MC putting her man down for his various inadequacies. There’s a single note piano melody that bounces over an incredibly fat bass and super funky beats that are virtually uncluttered by other elements in the mix. I like the rhymes, agnostic on the piano, love the bass and dig the beats. I actually listened to and enjoyed the lyrics which is rare for me in a mainstream hip hop track.
