Music for 10/6/20!!! Ellen Jewell, Lillie Mae, Dylan Scott, Rodney Cowell

@@@ Ellen Jewell: Gypsy (Bear Run, 2019) One folk listen to kick us off today and three country listens below, all from a 2019 AllMusic notable release email. I think I’ve heard Ms. Jewell before but I’m not 100%. This is labelled as Americana which I think is more accurate than the folk label from All Music. This tune sports a mixture of bluegrass, a bit of Emmylou Harris space country, and a tad of folk. I love the sounds here and how they’re put together. Spacious but not cheesy and Jewell’s voice is pretty sweet and relaxed. I’m a big fan of the guitar player layering in some sweet melodic runs. I also dig the mandolin player, hell I just like this track. Let me check out a bit more — she goes for the upright bass in the second tune, you can’t fuck with that. I think my wife is gonna jump and down for this record and I think she does a great job with her songs and Imma circle back on this music.

@@@ Lillie Mae: You’ve Got Other Girls for That (Third Man, 2020) Jack White, music impressario of the 21st century launches another female country musician? The opening sounds like a hayseed Zeppelin track til Mae comes in on the microphone. I’m most surprised by the reverbed out production which pushes the track towards an indie psych neighborhood. It’s not that but a couple of steps in that production. It’s purely personal preference but I don’t love her voice or I don’t love how it’s being presented here. She sounds boxy and girlish. I’m a minute from the end and she certainly sounds more space rock than alt country to me.

@@@ Dylan Scott: An Old Memory and Me (Curb, 2019) Oh, we got ourselves the classic drowning sorrows in a bar thinking about a past love. Some tasty and super understated acoustic guitar playing in the first third here, a little piano, and a classic country voice. It’s hard to tell if this is gonna explode into a cheese bomb as the hints are there. Very polished production, oh it’s building in energy and you know he needs to be alone sometimes, leave a sad dude alone. This is between an old memory and him. Ultimately it flirts with exploding into a cheesy comet streaking across the sky but it decides not to.

@@@ Rodney Crowell: Deep in the Heart of Uncertain Texas (RC1, 2019) An alt country old timer doin his thing here in a tune about fishin’ and nature. Crowell’s unique voice and country poetic lyrics make him alt as the band playing is pretty straight — some accordion, fiddle, snare stick on top of guitar and bass. It’s got just a twinge of the Band here. ‘We get high on the lake and float down the river, get off on the backroads and get lost in the woods — that’s pretty good back to nature lyrics. I would like to and am listening to more of this record as I finish up this pocket review. Smart lyrics and roots country/rock blenderized well.
