@@@ Bad Bunny: Dakiti (Rimas, 2020) Just a quick digression here. The 2nd track of today’s post is a really intelligent hip hop track about surveillance technology. I went to get the video for this Bad Bunny track and up pops the add for Huawei’s new earbuds. Let’s be real — most music is for sale to sell itself or another product (ahem Bad Bunny) — why don’t you just get these earbuds and listen to Bad Bunny and chill? And some music is for messages that are trying to find other people. It is like that as far as I’m concerned. I’m expecting a Bad Bunny flavored boombaton flavored loverboy dancefloor banger. That’s not a radical call. It’s in Spanish and that’s a blessing for me personally. I don’t see what more folks don’t notice Bad Bunny’s thick tongue style. He’s got a guest whose flow I much prefer. I think my favorite part of this track is the cover on Apple Music. It’s pretty predictable the music that is, there’s a lot of this floating around.
@@@ The Suspect Allegedly: We Should Have Listened to the Unabomber (Self-released, 2020) I was contacted by the artist for this track review. First off, this is a bold title and I don’t understand what is intended by the title but I don’t object. It’s more a homegrown hip hop, this is no super polished Kendrick Lamar joint but I’m cool with that. The dominant features here are the splashy beat and the MC energy, this guy is all over the mic. Ooh, he passed the mic to a gent who’s going off on technology surveillance, I like this and I now understand the reference to the Unabomber who objected to the spread of technology in our society. This is really solid shit, Imma buyer of this. He just urinated on the circuit breaker, excellent, eat 3d printed beef, no you didn’t. Fucking excellent and creative work here. A hot pumping vibe, excellent rhyming and shit hot lyrics with solid sounds, check it out!
@@@ Zachary Knowles: super sad songs (FADER, 2020) I’m not the main demographic for the sweet sad songs. If it’s gonna be sad I want it all the way down like Plastic Ono Band, that’s some hopeless shit right there you can feed off and grow from. This, on the other this is some Justin Bieber influenced business with another teaspon of sugar or a different sweetness. He’s super tired of writing super sad songs about you. He’s stuck up in his room. I have a solution, don’t write these songs! It’s cool and this is a decent song but you don’t have to write it. Nice beats, tight arrangement but he wears the hook ‘super sad song’ out. To say he wears it out is kind.
@@@ Sho Baraka: Their Eyes Were Watching (Humble Beast, 2020) I got to this Christian musician as I’m on the label’s mailing list. The label blurb described a blend of hip hop and spirituals and indeed it’s doin that pretty sophisticatedly. A peppy/funky beat, a simple piano chord progression, a little black gospel vocal choir coming in and out and an uplifting MC. There’s also some jazz feels up in here which is not surprising. Overall it’s not about the sounds, it’s about how the sounds are combined and I like the arrangment here. It could be a soggy overly righteous track but it’s not.
