Music for 9/15/15!!! John Glacier, Lucretia Dalt, Blush’ko, Theia

@@@ LYAM: Origami (feat. John Glacier, Shygirl) (VLF, 2019) I got to this via an email from an Australian online music site called I’ve found some pretty interesting music through their promo emails. It opens jazz like with trumpet and some noodly/washed out guitar before some scratching and then into hip hop. Beats are polished and not trap and the most notable sonic element are some pitch shifted voices that sound like chattering aliens. Fat but not ridiculous bass and the MC works over a sung section. A female MC also takes a turn on the microphone, and then a third MC I think. Pass it around, pass the mic around!. Overall a more polished and funky arrangement than what you might hear in popular American hip hop which presently is some variation of trap business or retro NYC flavors.

@@@ Lucrecia Dalt: Disuelta (RVNG, 2020) A female Colombian experimental musician gets out there on this track. The main elements in the early part of this song are some vocals processed to feel like a choir but also placed back in the stereo field. A siren like sound repeating and a some tinkly, insistent percussion-esque sounds might drive you a bit insane, ooh that felt so good when it stopped oh and it started up again. This track has the feel of an opener/table setter and the second track comes in with some more, differently processed vocals, a dark rumbling cloud serving as a bass sound and more electro bits and chunks. I appreciate that she’s not afraid to sonically grate, I have no problem with that. I’m feeling like if you don’t like the vocal presentation there’s not much more to hang your hat on. The sounds feel a bit randomly placed together and I would like to see more relationship between them. There’s a good chance I’m not getting this but I do chew through a lot of tracks and it feels a bit unfocused.

@@@ Blush’ko: Moon (Lekker Collective, 2020) I got to this track via an email from this label/collective called the Lekker collective. I believe they’re run out of Australia. Slotted as r&b soul the track opens with chill keyboard and a sample of a bic lighter which I’m guessing is lighting a spliff. A cheeba, some broccoli, some CBD in some paper, stankweed, hippie shit, chronic, oh it is indeed very reefer-us. The gent singing rocks a moany bedroom flow and the arrangement is a stew of loverboy sounds. I do like the overall liquid vibe of the sounds, I dig that. He’s gonna take it to the moon, so apparently this is some sort of intergalactic booty jam, all right, horny spaceship music. I like the drumbeat, tight and retro and providing some firmness to the track. Like the sounds but don’t love this vocal style.

@@@ Theia: Frat Boyz ( , 2020) I can’t remember how I got to this track, a rare ommission from my ethically run music review blog. This track is part of an EP blurbed as a bold dance-pop mixture. It is an anthem to frat boys, something I could do without. A lot of vocal tracks, and a herk-a-jerk feel as the rhythms jump around from section to section. I hate to be too harsh, well not really, but this is trash. I don’t mind all the sounds but the lyrics are straight word salad and the structure of the track is madness. I guess it’s a thin line between boldness and trash. One of the most annoying aspects of the track is the blocky rhythmic delivery of the singer, it’s kindergarden MC time. Please stay away.
