Music for 9/10/20!!! Macka B and Ted Ganung, Mateus Aleluia, PVRIS, Ledisi

@@@ Macka B & Ted Ganung: Stop It, Idiot Ting (Greensleeves, 2020) I caught this single on the WRIR weekly playlist but it’s due to my undying love for his last track ‘Cucumba to di world’ an anthem to vegetables that earned this peep. This is a slow jam about family relationships and fighting with one’s family members. It’s clear he doesn’t know anybody in my family. Sonically, there’s some pretty and a bit mournful guitar playing, a chill beat but the emphasis here is on the lyrics and the dual vocalist attack. Macka B runs the microphone, he’s got skills and flavors. I like it all right but I’ve fought a bunch against my own family and my inlaws when unfair shit has happened so the lyrics come off as a bit meh to me, but others might find them comforting. This doesn’t distract from Macka B’s skills.

@@@ Mateus Aleluia: Nganga Njila (Selo Disc, 2020) Last week’s WRIR playlist email. Imma have to googlePimp as I thought it was set to be African music but it sounds like a Brazilian jam so I’m guessing it’s a track from a former Portugese colony in Africa. Noop, this is from Bahia Brazil but it just shows there’s a think line between Brazilian and African music. And it shows I’m not very bright. Lots of vocalists here led by a lower register gent, a couple of guitars, and what sounds like hand drumming and a kit drummer. The vibe is active and chill at the same time. It’s an energetic and joyous stew of sound and I feel the party vibe. I’m a big fan of the guitar playing in spots and I enjoy the energy of all those rhythms. The player continued to the next track while I did a random bit of doom scrolling and it’s another very solid track. I think I will throw this on my list and circle back to check it out more thoroughly when I have the time.

@@@ PVRIS: Use Me (Warner, 2020) All Music last week! I’m justifiably skeptical of major label alternative music as it’s usually over produced rock with a dash of paprika or other spice. Female singer, moany but not breathy (thank God), a fairly involved arrangement which I don’t mind but I have the sneaking suspicion that they’re going for snagging some r&b listeners in their alternative net. Production flourishes and a general vibe signify the mashing of rock intentions with r&b-ish flavors. I think the singer could pare back the drama a bit, the beats are pretty low profile and could use some flavor and the arrangement is both interesting and a bit annoying. I don’t know, a tune titled Use Me in 2020 — I could use a different sentiment, no?

@@@ Ledisi: Where I am (Listen Back/BMG, 2020) Also off last week’s All Music notable release email. Slower than midtempo r&b with really delicious synth sounds, basic beats, and a stylish but not somewhat restrained female singer. The background vocals do push through in places and she’s laying down the law as to how to approach her and what you will get if you cross the bridge where she is. Don’t be poppin’ shit, bra. My favorite element here is the keyboard sounds/playing, I’m agnostic on the beats, and I’m slightly prejudiced against the background vocals. She is a fine singer. The player clicked through to the next track as I was searching for my next listen and it came on with the full early mid ’80s soul/funk explosion — it’s retro without going super far back in time.
