Music for 9/8/20!!! Matt Wilson, Ruston Kelly, Motorpsycho, Moon Attendant

@@@ Matt Wilson: Jabaloni (Palmetto, 2020) All of today’s listens are from a deep dive on last week’s All Music notable release email. I follow this jazz drummer on the Twatter and he seems like a high quality human. This track, the second on the record, opens with a dual horn attack and a pretty bouncy upbeat arrangement that gives way to brisk swinging. To my ears this refers back to the hard bop era where the energy is quite high and I will say that the recording here reflects the energy of the playing as opposed to dampening it. A lot of current jazz likes to present itself as rather highbrow and refined sounding which I don’t like. This is a punchy invigorated sound, very present both modern and retro simultaneously. I like Wilson’s drumming but more importantly I dig the whole package as presented here. I will check out more of this when I get time to rock more of it.

@@@ Ruston Kelly: Brave (Rounder, 2020) Roots music out on Rounder is gonna be less cheesy than yer mainstream country/roots business. Kelly’s voice here is notable for its low key intonation and right on the line gravel/roughness factor. Maybe a bit too big of a reverb patch on his voice but that’s personal preference. He’s talking about living a decent life and being an upright person — he didn’t give up to the darkness, that sort of thing and how he wants to be remembered when he dies. Depending on your internal makeup a perfect or completely inappropriate tune for the middle of a pandemic where everybody is acting like shit. Outside of the reverb patch I like the understated production and his vocal work.

@@@ Motorpsycho: The All is One (Rune Grammophone, 2020) I spend a significant amount of time listening all over and it appears some folks is trying to bring the rawk back. Rawk!! This is your polished, old dude in a Porsche style rock, fancy and manicured with no mess/no fuss in the sounds here. The singer sounds just like somebody but my hard drive needs to be upgraded to ssd as I can’t recall. This is also hopeful rock, partly from the composition, the sounds and the aspirational vocal style. I think he’s singing something like ‘I can’t believe in your strongman schtick and you’re still a dick’ so it’s an anti-Trump track. I fucking loathe the bad orange man but this form of protest is pretty sanitized and will roll off that demented haircut, if you can call that a haircut that fuck — fuck him.

@@@ Moon Attendant: Hot Power (Big Potato, 2020) Psychedelic groove rawk people! Comes out steady and growling, then goes delayed vocal spaceship. It’s got an occasional herk a jerk switcheroo to the arrangement. If you dig contrast then you might notice the sweetness here that is packaged along side a helping of psych production sounds and rock. The danger with sweetening is that it easily waters down the rockin’ and it’s reasonable to say that this is a tad out of balance if you’re gonna call it psychedelic. If you’re gonna call it retro rock with some psych flourishes well then I’m with you but it’s important to be transparent and honest in what you’re getting. This track clocks in at over 7 minutes so it’s a big boy rock banger that converts to big ass rock guitar jam right before the middle and I’m guessing it’s gonna stretch for a bit then return home with something similar to the beginning sounds. And it does mostly.
