Music for 9/3/20!!! Acid Coco, Summer Dennis, Ryan Hemsworth, Alan Wakeman

@@@ Acid Coco: Yo Bailo Sola (El Palmas, 2020) If I remember the music publicist email this is a female-centric cumbia track. Right off the bat I hear the synth in there and am surprised that it works so well sounding authentic and right at home with other cumbia sounds. I understand authentic is a complicated word when discussing music, don’t snipe my shit I have to use words to express myself. It is a woman on the microphone and her voice projects strength. It’s a stew of layers with the synth and the string instrument, and the electric guitar being the main elements outside drums and bass. The synth in here probably triggerred the word acid being added to the artist and I give respect to how it all holds together.

@@@ Summer Dennis: Ghetto Rona (Rhymes Enterprises, 2020) I got to this Washington DC funk/soul track via a music publicist and I’m peeping it because of its title. I hope it doesn’t let me down. It’s a retro funk track where the female singer starts out with the line ‘I don’t want to be in the ghetto’ — I think that what she’s saying. The sounds here connect back to ’80s funk outfits like the Gap Band. I expected the lyrics to refer more explicitly about coronavirus but from what I can gather she doesn’t want to be in the ghetto because it’s so ghetto. There’s a term for that in logic, but yeah it’s ghetto in the ghetto cuz it’s the the ghetto. Of course, I’m sympathetic to the various awful things that happen in the ghetto as the singer refers to babies crying and grandmas taking care of things. I’m not heartless I was just expecting a different lyrical approach. I could be mishearing what’s going on here.

@@@ Ryan Hemsworth: Hail (Friends Of/Jagjaguwar, 2020) Via the Twatter! Me loves the Twatter, such a delicious stew of chaos. Though slotted as alternative, I’m hearing almost all r&b sounds, oh there’s that clean/boring electric guitar. The arrangement and the production here is very tight and the sounds are delicious. Compositionally, it’s a tad 4th grade. I don’t know if we’re gonna get some intimate indie vocalizations, it’s not looking great. As is my usual feeling with so much indie the low energy/slackness is not a draw for me. I can see mad hipster coffee shops grooving on this, something to make your own naimsayin’? Some dude just started singing and that punches my ticket out as it just sags down into art school New Age-y business.

@@@ Alan Wakeman: Manhattan Variation (Gearbox, 2020) I got to this via the London Jazz blog and let me say nice cover. These are reissues/remasters as the date range in the title of the record is 1969-1979. If you young kids haven’t encountered the beauty of tape hiss, check out the track I’m listening to. Somebody coulda hit this with the izotope! Anyway, the piano playing that opens this track is flowery as well as interesting. When the full band comes in, the track becomes much more interesting. The instrumentation is sax, trumpet, maybe two saxes, maybe a trombone, piano bass and drums. A lotta horns let’s just leave it at that. The tempo is swingin’ and I feel the drummer and the bass player here. If you play straight jazz really swinging it is the key for me as a listener. This is good stuff, check it out for some classic straight flavors.
