Music on 8/17/20!!! Boldy James, Dan Waldman, Vlossom, Helena Deland

@@@ Boldy James: Bernadines (ALC/Boldy James, 2020) I got to this track via a feature on Vice.com about this Detroit rapper .  Now Mr. James says he gives not one fuck about people understanding his music because 9 out of 10 people can’t.  Well, them’s fighting words, let’s see what Boldy be up to.  James is both drawly and bouncy and he flows over Alchemist produced sounds in a super hip manner.  There’s a really catchy vocal hook ‘murder is a tough thing to digest’.  Sonically it’s a blend of trippy horror movie type sounds on top of a subtle and bouncy ass beat.  Bernadine is slang for a fun loving queen.  I’m checking out another track and the trippy sounds move down and Boldy ups the rhythmic microphone energy.  He’s a really skilled MC and the sounds here are delicious.  Lots of gun and drug related rhymes, just so you know

@@@ Dan Waldman: Bowery & Patternation (Self-released, 2020) I saw this jazz guitarist mentioned on the London Jazz Blog.  It’s a guitar trio record with guitar, bass, and drums.  Oops and sax!  That was a great detective show, oops and sax, came on late.  This is tune that fits the word loping or slightly lower than loping, it’s got an easiness to it without crawling along.  Part of that could be all the guitar washes of sound that sedate the proceedings pleasantly.  The drummer is out front interrupting the just below looping (and a tad loping) melody.  I’m not a huge fan of straight jazz and especially not straight guitar jazz but I appreciate how the leader, Waldman, sits in the back just washing away while the drummer is kinda out front.  Ooh, another guitar track comes in trafficking in a more typical straight jazz guitar melody and it’s all right.  OMG, this is almost a 10 minute banger, I’m not sure I can hang for the full show.  I think I’m a bit around halway and it looks like it’s gonna continue with some laidback melodic work so I’ll leave it to others to finish this journey.  Like the drummer most here.

@@@ Vlossom: My Friend (etcetc Music Party, 2020) I saw this outfit shouted on the Australian music outlet Happy.  It’s a frat boy dancefloor banger, some funky elements as well as a straightness to the funk as well.  Mr. Vlossum (assuming) rocks the high loverboy tone and full goes full sun over the moon in the chorus.  Full transcendental flow.  At about 2 minutes it goes kind of California hippie folk with a big singalong anchored around the song title My Friend, before the groove comes back and that’s where it’s at.  I like parts of it.

@@@ Helena Deland: Someone New (Luminelle, 2020)  I saw this indie singer namechecked on the Twatter by the guy running the label.  Of course, he doesn’t disclose that he’s pimping his own releases — that’s pretty standard for music marketing.  After a droll ambient intro she gets into a second intro part before the drummer comes some stylish business as well as classic indie guitar arpeggios.  I’m more interested in the sounds than the lyrics and her singing though I do like the tone of her voice and she’s not overextended and working the microphone too radically.  I like the packaging, the sounds are really well presented here.
