Music for 8/5/20!!! BLACKPINK, Glass Animals, Dizzy, Skullcrusher

@@@ BLACKPINK: How You Like That (YG/Interscope, 2020) Some K pop, so get ready for the supersweet cultural appropriation that is K pop!  Wow, the trip here is wild — cute and ultra-feminine in the verse before shit gets dirty, boastful and bitchy in the chorus.  There’s a line in here ‘look at you now look at me, how you like that’ which I think is much deeper than what they might intend.  The sounds here are a blend of 1/3 urban/black, 1/3 pop, 1/3 sci fi/futuristic.  It’s not so much a question of whether I like this track or not as much as it is what the fuck is the intention here?  To emulate, to satirize, to translate, to co-opt, it’s not clear to me at all.

@@@ Glass Animals: Dreamland (Wolf Tone, 2020)  Oy, a pre release track from last week’s Line of Best Fit.  Mainstream electro cheese a couple notches more radical than standard Disney fare.  Too much reverb on the voice, oy.  It’s a lasagna pan of synthesizers, some twinkling, some blanket-y, some others just because you can, this bitch could use a beat, it’s just soggy with electro.  The lyrics hint at darker ideas so that contrasts somewhat with the sounds, bu

@@@ Dizzy: The Magician (Royal Mountain, 2020) Line of Best Fit bitches!  Indie pop as described?  Hmmm, not really and when you get to the chorus not at all.  This is mainstream electro pop rock with just a tiny bit of rock, not really any to be honest.  I guess many people want to hear a singer like this, but the girl-ish intimate flow in the verse followed by the multitracked mo dreamy female is not welcome in my world.   The vocal hook is ‘you be the bird, I’ll be the magician’.  I’m not sure at all what that’s about.  Meh, this is the kind of pretend emotionality I continually protest on this here blog.  Alas I realize I’m in the minority wanting some reality/depth/dimension to my music but I could give a fuck, this is my space and I rock it as I see fit.

@@@ Skullcrusher: Trace (Secretly Canadian, 2020) An indie darling on an indie darling label I got to via Line of Best Fit.  Let it not be said that indie folks are not as horny and pervy as this image for the video implies a lot of non-musical scenarios.  She is arch indie with that delicate, super sensitive introverted vibe.  Strummed acoustic guitars, a little banjo, and an interesting drone.  That’s the beginning section before it expands outward with a bass and either a real string part or an emulation of one before it returns back to the stripped down verse.  My favorite thing are her white cowboy boots and my least favorite thing here are the lyrics and the vocal delivery.  This is just shovelling more coal into these various classifications and lifestyle genre slots which I object to.  But hey, they’re nice boots and I do like the production here.
