@@@ Taylor Swift: the 1 (Taylor Swift, 2020) Let’s check out more of Tay Tay’s adult alternative, mature singer songwriter tray of cookies. Right out of the gate the piano, I want everybody to give the ringing piano chords a bit of rest, it’s played as fuck. I see in what’s left of the music press that this is the record where she grows up but this is a pretty low standard for adults rooted in reality — she sings with a breathy, white peepo out of touch reality. It’s very hard to describe but she is so self aware (like so many white peepo) that the vocal performance is hard to consume as authentic. So when you combine the fake meaningful piano sounds with her half human/half plastic vocal performance it makes it hard for a real musical fan like myself to eat this piece of cake and enjoy it. There’s still too much sugar in this cookie! Beats, as is usual for the Swift, are of secondary concern.
@@@ Pete Twist: The Honors (Boiler Room, 2020) I got to this track via a music publicist email from Goon Promotion. Very self deprecating there, Goon Promotion. Or just straight up, they might be goons. Also a seminal indie band, They Might Be Goons! However this is hip hop and it sounds like a somewhat retro New York-ish blend to the beats and the vibe. I like how the horn samples were placed and added to in the arrangement. A little graphic in its sexual references if the young kids be listening today. Other than that I dig the interplay between the MCs, those are the highlights for me.

@@@ Martyn Bootyspoon: The Grid (Fractal Fantasy, 2018) Funkier than normal dancefloor techno business that I got to via an Australian music magazine called Crack.io. Funkier beats, a less straight approach sonically, thicker bass and a tasty ass arrangements. Lyrically it’s inbetween a vocal riff/sample recycled for dancefloor focus and formal lyrics. The sound selection and the arrangement here rules the roost. I will most definitely check out more of Mr. Bootyspoon, in fact I’m checking out more of this EP as I finish up this post. More organic and less rigid than the vast majority of dance music. I’m checking out the first track called Spread the Kat and he’s got a drum machine cowbell up in the mix prominently. There’s no greater indication of phatness and aesthetic greatness than making the cowbell central to the track. This track, as opposed to 99% of other music out there does not require more cowbell, it’s full up.
@@@ Julianna Barwick: Healing is a Miracle (Ninja Tune, 2020) I’m a bit concerned about the title here as I’m skeptical of electronic music that functions as a cover for what is really New Age music. It opens with a full stereo field of pillowy synths, modulating a bit but kind of hovering like clouds. Oh, there’s the angelic female vocals with tons of reverb, just as I feared. Lots of exhalations and breathy impressions and I have a choice to either discuss something else here or denounce it Stalinistically. How’s everybody out there doing? Havin’ a good pandemic? Me and my crew fled NYC about 4.5 months ago and I’m starting to feel a bit like a refugee and I’m not sure what to do with that feeling. I want to go home, I don’t want to be forced out as nobody does. Anyway it’s just a big ol’ basket of synths and a super reverbed voice in this New Age ambient banger and do with it what you will.
