@@@ serpentwithfeet: Psychic (Secretly Canadian, 2020) I’m a fan of serpentwithfeet so as soon as I saw something new on an email from an Australian online music outlet I hit up the GooglePimp for a listen. The track opens with a lot of high tambourine like clink over fat low end stylings before mr. serpentwithfeet makes his entrance on the microphone. It’s a melancholic love tune as it appears he might have fallen in love with his psychic. I like the fragility of his voice and I like it better with fewer vocal tracks, the stacks of voxes drain the emotionality of it. Love his voice and the bass sounds but the tune didn’t blow me away.
@@@ Jojo Abot: Power to the God Within (Jojo Abot, 2019) I got to this African American musician and the listen below via an email from the Brooklyn club National Sawdust. Given the cover photo and the electronic label on Apple Music this should be African/world music influenced electronic music. Mostly dominated by voices (both female and male) then the drums come in pretty trapped out, thick fat fat (that’s double fat) bass to sit under those somewhat improvised voices, it’s a really nice combination of sounds. The vocal hook is something like ‘how does it feel to know you can be anything you want to be’ or some such sentiment. It’s thick, it’s funky, it’s trippy sweet and rough at the same time. The combination of very mainstream sounds with odd vocals and off kilter arrangements is fresh.
@@@ Ted Hearne: Place (New Amsterdam, 2020) This record slotted as classical music on Apple Music is divided into two parts the second part with Saul Williams, a spoken word hip hop guy I’ve heard before and have really liked. So I will sample from Part 2 due to my preferences but you are free to sample as you see fit. Yowsa, it gets into the white supremacy business right off the bat which I’m all up for and then come in the string swells and the non threatening drum machine beat. Think of this as a Laurie Anderson style art school half classical record with very different and more substantial voices. It sounds like the classical sounds here might be looped and served up hip hop style which I don’t find often. It’s a female on the microphone so these words might be composed by Saul Williams and delivered by someone else. I like it, I’m not jumping up and down but I like it. Given the directness of the lyrics I could have used some rougher sounds.
@@@ Minor Science: Polyglottal (Whities, 2020) Aargh, I’m usually quite committed to letting readers know how I got to a track but I would be lying if I said I remembered what email or internet thing-a-ma-bob sent me to this track. It opens ambiently and quite rhythmically with lots of hi hats and blurp action before the floor shaking bass comes in and back to the blurp so it’s gonna be like that now. Tasty relentless basslines, classic 808 drum machine business and periodic synth blasts; those are the key elements here. There’s a lot of shifting of sounds around but it could use some other movement to it to keep me more engaged. Big ups on the basslines. I’m checking out portions of the fourth track and it’s got a bit more melodic synth presence to go with the glitch salad which works better for me.
