Music for 6/10/20!!! Enslaved, Imperial Triumphant, SOILWORK, Behemoth

Aargh, I forgot to post this shit!

@@@ Enslaved: Homebound ( 2020) Today we listen off Apple Music’s metal section where you find mostly the big name metal with money behind it.  Comes out more So Cal punk than metal but with a few pubes of metal mostly in the guitar sound.  My bad, they switch up the section from friendly to metal ghouls before getting back to the friendly bounce.  Yikes it’s like listening to schizophrenic metal, before it goes kinda grunge-y in a third section.  Yowsa, these guys stretch a listener’s ability to roll with rapid sub genre switching.  Then a big ass classic metal guitar shred, oy!!  I appreciate the boldness but I like my metal presented more simply — just a brutal skull cracking blast to the dome.

@@@ Imperial Triumphant: Rotted Futures (Century Media, 2020) A pre-release track, right around 6 minutes, opens up dark and ambient looks like a setup before they come in and crush everyone like the insects they are!!!  After it dicks around like that it heads out into a math-y, rough proggy thing.  I like it and today is the day of sonic surprises.  This is not what I thought a tune called Rotted Futures would sound like.  Well the singer sounds like a rotten future kinda fella.  He’s definitely more authentic than Lady Gaga and he’s more of a gravedigger than a raging aggro type of caveman.  I like this flavor pack as they really don’t seem to give a fuck.

@@@ SOILWORK: Death Diviner (Nuclear Blast, 2020) More metal, more metal, more metal!  This one opens up at the line between metal and hard rock and arena rock.  Big big guitar riffs and a big singer.  Big everything here!  If Bon Jovi took a bit of cheese off the top and hit the gym for a week they would sound like this.  Big vocal hook, big everything here.  Double kick drum in the chorus and back into the verse.  Big verse!  Not really my thing, much more for the big alienated suburban listeners that use hair gel.  I like my metal big dirty.  They play well just not my thing.

@@@ Behemoth: Evoe (Metal Blade, 2020) It’s a lot of drumming, a bit of threedling guitar (plus a solo) a singer you can understand but he’s sandy/gravelly.  The drums are dominant, dominating like the cops out in the streets. Surprisingly bright in places, in the place where he keeps invoking Mephistopheles.  Mephistopheles is a demon from German folklore, I don’t know him, I never met this demon, I’m just trying to get a little definition to what we’re talking about.  It’s definitely a level of aggro that I like but it goes from a metal pounding to a pretty open attempt at a hook in the chorus and I’m confused by it.  It totally could be me as I’m not very bright.
