@@@ Jim O’Rourke: Shutting Down Here (GRM, 2020) Stranded Records weekly newsletter! Oh boy, this is a bit of a shitshow. This record isn’t on Apple Music and the vinyl is up on bandcamp but you can’t stream the 34 minute piece that constitutes this record. I think this is quite frankly retarded. So I will settle for some bullshit mono GooglePimp video below but I’m not happy about it. A 34 minute banger is gonna open slowly and it does here. I can’t tell if this is a dirty bullshit rip on GooglePimp or if there are these odd low glitchy and indistinct sounds at points in the tune. That’s why I prefer streaming off Apple Music or bandcamp, I can be sure that I’m getting what the artist intended. What I’ve heard thus far sounds like a blend of classical vibes, ambient music, and soundtrack type feels. I think there are burbling, insect-y electronic sounds in this compostion so that’s been cleared up. I admire a 34 minute piece while finding it a bit self-indulgent at the same time. I hear the components presented here and I like them but I’m not feeling especially pulled in.
@@@ Experience Unlimited: Peace Gone Awry (Black Fire, 1977) This is a new reissue of music from this long running Afro-funk Sun Ra type outfit that I got to via this week’s Stranded Records. Another situation where I can’t find this on Apple Music or bandcamp and I’m stuck with GooglePimp. Blech! I don’t get the remastered quality and the full funk experience. Poor me. The track has a bit of fusion in the bass, a little Doobie Brothers in the guitar (boo hiss) and a polished Earth Wind and Fire feel to the horns. There are two singers and while I find the lyrics a tad hippy dippy for my taste their singing is my favorite part of the track. I think these guys recorded over a long long period of time and I would check out more of their stuff to see if it suited my taste but I can’t because it’s not available to stream. Bummer.
@@@ e4444e: Solar (Romy Church, 2020) I got to this listen and the next one from an online Australian music magazine. It opens glitchy then segues into a strummed hippie punk kinda thing. I do dig the organ that comes into the tune about a third of the way in, I think that’s an interesting element to the track. I started this post yesterday and lost part of the review for this tune so I’m checking this out for the second time and the tune upon another listen has a large space rock aspiration — it’s very ’70s faded and a wee tired and mopey. Towards the end of the track a metal triangle comes in which begs the ongoing question — did they try to put some cowbell up in this bitch? I’m not sure it would work but my undying faith in cowbell hopes they gave it a shot.
@@@ Reb Fountain: Don’t You Know Who I am (Flying Nun, 2020) Another track from an Australian online music magazine. It’s got a distinctly Nick Cave feel out of the gate. Minimal drums, ringing piano chords, a restrained guitar figure and what I would call a cynical, introspective feel to the singing. I like it, I’m not jumping up and down but I like it. It settles down into a pretty steady groove and I think a few little bits and flavors would keep me more interested especially as there is a lot of singing and a bit of evolution in the sounds would make me pay more attention to the singer. By the end it feels a tad long.
