Music for 6/1/20!!! Kassa Overall, schroothoop, Gregory Isaacs, Virginia Bright

@@@  Kassa Overall: Show Me a Prison (Brownswood, 2020) Off an All music notable release email from February.  I keep ’em in my inbox so when I’m looking for fresh meat to listen to I have some.  Jazz but not typical as the track opens up with very rhythmic vocal chanting, ringing piano chords and singing.  I believe this is out of the UK, yes it is.  I don’t ever want to be the genre bitch but this is really electro r&b.  Folks is perfectly within their rights to call it jazz but I describe it as I know it to be as people are already confused enough.  I like it, it’s not particularly wild and the creativity lies in the combining of sounds and putting them out in a jazz spirit.

@@@ schroothoop: Klein Gevaarlijk Afval (Rebel Up records, 2020) World jazz trio from Brussels that I got to via an email from the label.  Dutch for ‘junkyard’ or some such these guys come out with a grooving track with lightly dub flavored percussion and a flute player getting all world music and shit.   I dig this — I like grooves, I like dub, I like world music!!!  The second tune ‘mammotoenker’ puts up a similar vibe with a different lead melodic instrument and I’m officially feeling this record.  Imma swing back and peep this whole platter when I get the chance.  It’s not the heaviest most abstract stuff out there but it ticks a lot of boxes — freshness factor, good playing, interesting playing, etc.  Check it out!

@@@ GREGORY ISAACS: Babylon Too Rough (17 North Parade, N/A) I’m not sure what’s up with this tune as it’s over 8 years up on the YouGooglePimp, but it’s listed this week on WRIR’s playlist email.  They don’t usually put rando tracks up on their weekly charts email.  Let’s just go with the mystery of it.  It’s part of a 2009 compilation on Apple Music and it’s hot outside and sticky in the headphones for sure.  Man I love a great tough dub bass player with a sweet vocal over the top.  Hissy hi hats with that stabbing guitar playing.  Roots!

@@@ Virginia Bright: Ven Sigueme (Cuarentena 2020). The track sounds African and when you Google her and find her bio she’s a product of an unspecified African culture and was born in Spain.  Of course, the music doesn’t have to be tied to a specific country but it’s four on the floor kick drum, a lot of single line guitar melodies and Bright’s singing.  I like the guitar playing most of all and her singing after that.  This is a sunny dancefloor banger which focuses on a smooth listening experience.  The words ven sigueme translate as ‘come on, follow me’ so that works with the music.  At least to my ears.
