@@@ Model/Actriz: Suntan (Dots Per Inch, 2020) A bunch of these listens are from Fader’s you gotta love these tracks list or some such similarly named list. I picked it as it was described as noise, but I’m not getting a noise vibe from the opening. It’s a lower register, brooding dude, a kick drum boom bap, and one note plunk and then it breaks into a slightly dark rock track. Maybe there will be noise in the chorus, oh a bit but not too much and spilly. The center is collapsing is the hook in the chorus and I think that’s solid. I think this is going to build to a completely spastic end but maybe they won’t release the tension here. He ends up sort of busted and fallen apart and while it feels a bit pose-y, he’s getting at something here and I appreciate that.
@@@ Itzy: 24Hrs (JYP Entertainment, 2020) South Korean electro pop gets a wee bit of trap infused into it for a mad mash. The bass is the biggest imported sound here, this would be at home in a Future track. Then it goes from the fat buzzy bass to a shoutalong shopping mall chorus, it’s quite a mindfuck. They also throw in a third grade chainsaw patch that de-pops the proceedings. I’m not really sure what to make of this song, it’s a party track and a weird one at that! Check it out, don’t let me discourage you, it’s a wild ride. Like a hot chocolate enema, which is a good metaphor for this track sweet but quietly dark.
@@@ Iann Dior: Sick and Tired (TenThousand Projects, 2020) Take some Cali style punk pop and smash it into hip hop beats and then rhymes about yourself and your drinking. Wow, I get the combination but it sorta makes my balls shrink. Metaphorically that is. I could go into a quasi philosophical rant about why this doesn’t work for me but my generic view is either get drunk a lot and be cool with it or go get some help as this song isn’t going to get you anywhere. Also, the world needs less self-absorption not more.
@@@ Ike Yard: M. Kurtz ( , 1980 or so) I’m on the mailing list for Stranded Records and they are my go to for reissues and this is one. They say this is one of their favorite records of all time. These reissues (especially the vinyl editions) also produce a generous helping of confusion as this band was founded in 1979 in New York and there are two records up on Apple Music dated 2017 and 2018, blah blah blah I will just GooglePimpTube it. It’s a trio, bass/programming/vocals and guitar. It’s like Devo but artier and Devo had some art to them, especially the hats. I love me dem hatz. There’s almost a jazz strain to it as it is spontaneous and small changes that keep it from feeling too looped out. The arrangement is pleasantly sparse and it’s krauty but not robotic in the way some krautrock drives me nuts. It’s a hefty track weighing in at 5:37 but I like it a whole bunch and wish the record was up on Apple Music so I could check out more. I fucking loathe Google btw.
