@@@ Alborosie: Unprecedented Time (VP, 2020) This was on this week’s WRIR weekly playlist email but not up on Apple Music so I’m GooglePimpin’ and streaming it off the GooglePimpTube. It’s updated roots reggae music with lyrics that include references to the present Covid situation. References to environmental destruction and ill human behavior. The vocal hook is ‘unprecedented time, you gotta be strong in your mind.’ It’s hard to dispute the straightforwardness and timeliness of that. Small modern touches like a bit of drum machines and some acoustic guitar sounding type thing but it’s hard to tell as it’s a thick stew up in here. It’s a fat track no doubt.
@@@ Peter Oren: The Greener Pasture (Western Vinyl, 2020) Also off last week’s All Music notable releases. This is an interesting blend of sounds including a drum machine, some rolling electric guitar, a little electro garnish, Oren’s gravelly voice and occasional string flourishes. Lyrics are pretty literal with mentions of pastures and cows and rotating the cows etc. It expands out from their to laws and super PACs so it’s quite specific and abstract at the same time. I had blog post saving fart and had to re-listen to this track this morning and really enjoyed it much more than the first listen. I find it often works like that, just because it doesn’t hit you over the head the first time doesn’t mean it isn’t a really high quality song. Check this out.
@@@ Quelle Chris & Chris Keys: Sudden Death (Mello Music, 2020) Off last week’s All Music notable release email. I’ve heard Quelle Chris and find him to be quite skilled. This track is hip hop with strong classic funk flavors, especially what sounds to be a person playing electric bass. As in not a keyboard bass, there’s a different feel. It looks like it’s going to be a small cadre of women half singing and half rapping vocals which is creative and the kind of thing Chris does, he doesn’t give much of a fuck about conventions and I respect that. The extensive amount of piano gives a regal flavor to the track and as it progresses across the finish line it really is more of a funk/soul instrumental track with unusual vocalizing.
@@@ Macula Dog: Breezy (Wharf Cat Records, 2020) Also off last week’s All Music notable release email. Electronic music on Apple and experimental rock on All Music so let’s go, it’s a chopped electronic with robot transformed voices, chopped beats and plenty of video game bleeps and blaps. It’s more weird than funky and more mechanically melodic than beat driven. It’s a bit low energy, it could use some Red Bull and shit.
