@@@ TrueMendous: That Don’t Mean (High Focus, 2020) The first three listens today come courtesy of the Line of Best Fit weekly email. First off, great name for an MC, TrueMendous. She’s from the UK but for some reason the female Brit MCs don’t make me laugh the way some of the gents do. She works up quite a bit of steam and she’s rhyming the school Yale with going to jail which is pretty unique. There are a couple of stabbing guitar sounds that keep getting injected into the mix and generally the blend of sounds is not distinctive of any hip hop subgenre — trap, retro etc. She’s got a smart mouth but that don’t mean she should go to Yale, it’s a pretty clever chorus. She might be involved in a life of crime or is playing a hip hop character that’s involved in a life of crime but that’s not uncommon and her emphasis is more on storytelling than tha life.
@@@ JoJo: Gold (Warner, 2020) Super intimate and Prince-influenced lovergirl r&b. A short guitar figure, some breathy singing, and some sidestick beat action. I hope whoever produced this track got paid as they did some outstanding work here building this sonic environment, and I don’t often hear white lady soul that actually boasts a fair amount of soul. If you have a nice set of headphones and a people like myself has to have a fairly high end set of cans, ya know the ones that can be a little embarrassing to be seen with in public. I have big ones for the inside and then more modest action for the outdoors. This is a pretty lush and fat track if you like this style of music and you can get lost in this track.
@@@ Tom Misch & Yussef Dayes: Storm Before the Calm (Beyond the Groove, 2020) Blurbed on Apple Music as a blend of jazz, hip hop and electronica. After a blasting and filtered drum solo it goes into a smooth jazz thing on top of a mostly kicking funky drum groove. If this was a car it would be like a, oh I don’t know enough about cars to finish this metaphor and what’s a metphor for? It’s 4 PHosphourous right? Noam Chomsky? Sorry, dangled right there. It’s a little chopped salad production in places and I would have felt it more if the jazzwerk had been ya know as muscular as the drummer. It’s basically a WBGO jazz smoothie with a bit of Red Bull splashed in there from the drummer.
@@@ Beartooth: Afterall (Red Bull, 2019) Oh fuck, if it’s released by Red Bull it’s prolly not gonna be a saddie. You can be dour with low self esteem but they’re gonna rock — they draw a line right there, they’re gonna rock — and I can only dream of a life laced with Red Bull. I bet they get free Red Bull to Red Bull artists and I’m not sure that’s a good or bad thing. This is a mash of emo, arena rock, Orange County punk rock, and a bit of grunge. Just a pube or two of grunge. Very polished layer of vocals (the lead vocal sounds like a bunch of tracks mixed together) and a distinctly Linkin Park feel but with a little less theater and less drama. It’s very polished production which I’m not a big fan with heavy music and the singer, he’s a bit too dramatical for my taste. I know rock isn’t super popular these days and I think there are good reasons for it. This is overmixed and overproduced and is lacking in humanity and thus connection.
