Music for May 1, 2020!!! Joe Wong, Avishai Cohen, Fire in the Radio, Wu Fei & Abigail Washburn

@@@ Joe Wong: Dreams Wash Away (UMG, 2020) A song connected to a new Netflix animated series. I got to this track via a music publicist email.  It’s a pleasantly trippy track with a few Beatles feels as well as downer indie elements.  It opens with big panned guitars and reduces (like a good sauce) down to a strummed songwriter-y thing before bringing the full band back into it for a big hook chorus.  It’s sonically immaculate and does solid work as a soundtrack-y tune to run the credits over.

@@@ Avishai Cohen: Big Vicious (ECM, 2020)  I got to this music via the London Jazz music blog weekly email.  The first tune on the record and Imma guessing they’re going for a slightly different jazz vibe from the name Big Vicious.  Could be wrong, am wrong quite often!  It opens with a submarine ping that gives way to some mellow trumpet and a slightly janky drum beat.  I’m not a huge fan of the somewhat washed out guitar sound and I’m now guessing that the term big vicious is ironical or misinformed as this is quite luxurious straight jazz that colors pretty much within the lines.  It’s for people with good jobs.  I respect the playing but I like my jazz a bit hotter and wilder than this.  This is straight up missionary position jazz, satisfying in its way but a bit standard.

@@@ Fire in the Radio: Let’s Get to the Start (Wednesday, 2020) I got to this punk rock track via a music publicist email.  Apple Music has it typed in as EMO, so that’s emo punk with extra sauce Imma guessing.  It’s got a hopped up dream beat coming in, but it also has a distinct Cure feel to it, not up and over the top as some emo is.  Though it is EMO.  We all got different definitions and shit and for me this is less EMO and more ’80s/shoegaze flavorings.  Not that the fate of the universe rests on the classification.  I like the drummer, he’s working hard, the singer I’m sure is a great gent but he’s a bit low energy.  I like my EMO super ramped, at the end of the rope style.  This is more in the earnest camp and less in the ‘Shit is fucked up and bullshit’ camp.

@@@ Wu Fei & Abigail Washburn: The Roving Cowboy (Smithsonian, 2020) I got to this roots tune via the weekly CFUV playlist email.  I like the Smithsonain label as they’re going to be more focused on culture and less focused on commercial viability.  This is a collaboration between a Chinese artist and an American one and on this record they combine folk music traditions from China and America.  I was about to say this appears to be an instrumental record when both women start singing, one in English and Wu Fei in Chinese.  Washburn is rocking an old school vocal style.  I like the concept of this record and I like performances, especially the dual string playing.  Color me impressed when Washburn starts singing in Chinese, that’s impressive.
