Music for 4/10/20!!! Anna Phoebe, Nick Frahm, Laura Marling, Nicolas Jaar

@@@ Anna Phoebe: By the Sea (N/A, 2020) All of today’s listens are via a BBC music journalist and btw this track is not on Apple Music so I don’t about the Spotify.  You might have to GooglePimpTube this track if you crave it.  I saw the dreaded classical crossover label for her 2019 album.  This tune opens up with ocean waves and some reverbed out piano.  A lonesome violin comes in and I’m ready for a handkerchief as my heart strings is getting tugged and shit.  I’m not sure what genre this biscuit falls into but by the time the delay comes for the violin Imma wreck and concerned about tears on my keyboard.  It’s a bit too New Age for me, and f’real I would consider banning waves crashing in songs.  I couldn’t finish this.

@@@ Laura Marling: Held Down (Chrysalis/Partisan, 2020) This is a pre-release single and it’s got a fresh coffee house friendly, slightly playful and slightly bittersweet flavor to it.  She doesn’t get as vocally hectic as Joni Mitchell but she’s heard her records fo sho.  Big ’70s soft rock/folk business feels.  Around 1:40 the electric guitars come in and I like it less.  I say stick with the highly feminine coffeehouse rock.  Lots of vocal tracks, agnostic on that decision and a bit down on the electric guitar arrangements.  It’s so friendly it makes my teeth hurt.

@@@ Nicolas Jaar: Vanish (Other People, 2020)  Apparently this gent has contributed beats to Fucka Twigs and is somehow associated with The Weeknd so there ya go!  #marketing.  This opens up synth/organ and churchy as fuck.  Mad Christian drama.  I hope there’s more to this as I’m nodding off a bit.  I’d rather listen to straight religious music than this — here come the voices and it’s like Thom Yorke was xeroxed 4 times and put in a big reverb chamber.  For some folks that would be a good thing, I’m agnostic on it as I like Thom but I don’t need 4 of him.  Huge slightly nasal and whiny white boy feels.  It’s lush I’ll give you that.   I was watching a video a friend sent me of an South Asian gent explaining how folks in India use water to wash their asses after shitting and some go in for the wash (left hand!) from the front and some go in the back way.  I had to entertain myself there as the music wasn’t doing it for me.  The most important question here is are you a front-y or a back-sy.  Not Banksy, I love him.

@@@ Nick Frahm: Black Notes (Erased Tapes, 2020)  We are at the end of today’s listen and it’s been a bit highbrow and a bit arch for my taste.  But I’m always hoping for some explosions at the end and aren’t we all?  This opens up with a slight cloudy hiss and an arpeggiated piano.  There’s plenty of reverb and it’s meaningful or a version of meaningful, it’s not super meaningful to me.  This guy is tough, I don’t necessarily see him as a back-sy but he’s not coming from the front either.  To quote one of my favorite shows ever, Seinfeld, he’s a sidler.  Comin’ in from the side!  He’s definitly not up in yer grill and he’s not sneaking up on you like a traphouse brother.  Maybe he’s lulling me to sleep to steal my shit?  That would be deft.  I typed daft and that’s a salute to this BBC music journalist whose list I now shit on.  From the front.  I just stand on top of the list and shit on it and I will squat and wash from the front as well.  Have a great weekend everybody!
