Music for 3/25/20!!! Kut One, Eye Flys, Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith

@@@ Kut One: Active Shooter (Chopping Block, 2020) I’m on the email list for a bunch of independent hip hop folks and this cut is off one of those emails.  It’s a retro sound, but with a nice trippy and a bit trappy guitar loop that floats across your brain pan.  I wouldn’t be surprised if this was a drumkit but I could be wrong on that.  The bass is de-emphasized here so that leaves more room for other elements of the tune.  I like the MCs and they equate their microphone skills with being active shooters.  Accuracy, crazy aggressive, etc.

@@@ Eye Flys: Tub of Lard (Thrill Jockey, 2020) Alternative metal off this week’s All Music notable release email.  I’m not sure what’s alternative about this.  I like the energy here but it’s pretty standard business.  Pissed singer, punk/metal guitar stylings, there is a disturbing snail trail of feedback at the end of the first tune before they head into a muscular grind.  The start slipping in more noise as the record unfolds but it’s garnish-y and doesn’t change the fundamental formula they got going on.  It’s reminiscent of Stanford Prison Experiment from a bit ago.  I like this more as the record unfolds.

@@@ Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith: Expanding Electricity (Ghostly, 2020) I saw this female electronic artist on the Twatter.  I think Ghostly does mad advertising on the Twatter.  The record consists of two pieces, one ten minutes and one five minutes, both named Expanding Electricity.  Well it looks like the five minute piece is an edited single.  It opens with a cello and electronics and then it blossoms out into an orchestral piece with hammered marimba type sounds, string flourishes and an angel choir type of thing and an electronically processed melody snaking up and down the mix.  It’s a bit New Age for me.  I was with it til the vocals and then not so much.  It then explodes after that into an arpeggiated cornucopia of the same sounds, all carbonated and shit like ginger ale.  It’s well done just not my cup of tea.
