@@@ No_4Mat: City Boy EP (DISSOLUTE , 2019) Rando Twatter listen everybody! Not the new single mentioned on the Twatter, but this EP from last year and shit. The first tune is classic dancefloor techno banging with New Age synth sounds over the top. As the beat goes on the synth sound is altered, pulled back and changed. Pretty standard and good stuff. The second tune goes even more retro with a processed vocal sample and full unt-sss. I like the rhythmic components of the record but I could use a bit more creativity up top.
@@@ The Districts: You Know I’m Not Going… (Fat Possum, 2020) These two listens are off last week’s All Music notable release email. It opens up with a faded indie strummed intro, followed by some synth squirgles and the rest of the band coming into the song. It’s lonesome and a bit happy at the same time and a little trippy. That first tune may be an outlier as the second tune brings on the big indie rock feels, which is fine. I dig the singer, he’s a bit fragile, a bit ragged but not overly ya know, me based. I was into the second tune, but this third is a bit too ’80s for me. Stupid dance rock beat and a certain Thatcher feel. They’re a seasoned band and they play well and record well together but it’s not really my cup of tea.
@@@ Rookie: Rookie (Bloodshot, 2020) Both this listen and the one above are All Music notable release listens. More indie rock, is there never an end to the amount of indie rock out there? I’m guessing no, just keep putting your shovels in the ground and shovel it out to the masses. This one opens up super sharp in the mix and glammy as Hell. I guess if you want to put on your platform shoes and your yellow leather jacket and sashay down the boulevard in the middle of a pandemic this could be a ballsy ass soundtrack choice. I think it’s compressed a wee bit too much. The judgment as to when something is an homage and when something is a bite is a personal one. I think we’re pretty close to a bite here and I could use some sort of twist on this to push the glam rock sound further in its arc across the sky. Just as a point of reference I would refer listeners to Alex Chilton’s work with Big Star — exceptional band playing and just a fine example of young Americans getting their freak on.
@@@ The Weeknd: In Your Eyes (UMG, 2020) I don’t know what’s up with the Weeknd’s bloody face — is he a vampire or a victim? Maybe that’s the right question to ask if you care. I’m still waiting for that track that makes it clear to me why the weeknd is such a big deal. Up til now, not so much. Oh boy, this could be the soundtrack for a tween/teen romance movie. Big pillowy synth sounds, a straight beat, an arpeggiated synth here and a bit and the weeknd’s Michael Jackson’s falsetto work. The issue isn’t whether the weeknd can sing or not, he can sing, but does he do anything interesting? Not here I’m afraid. When he looks in your eyes, he sees there’s something burning inside. I’m floored at the rawness of that sentiment. I certainly hope folks are NOT singing this empty shell of a love ballad to loved ones passing to the other side due to the ‘rona! Pick something with some feels.
