@@@ Psychic Pollution – Digital Apathy (Eat Glass) All of today’s listens are off this week’s playlist email from CFUV out Vancouver Canada way. Ambient music that opens up sparsely with a pulse, then a chainsaw synth horn, and then a classic kick snare krautrock dongle. I dig the space as it focuses your attention on what’s happening. Sometimes you want to be overwhelmed and sometimes you want some restraint. Sometimes you feel like a nut. Over the course of the 7 minute track it loosens up and blends the sounds together and even gets a wee bit jazz like and improvised at certain points. The second tune, Fast Machine, busts out the classic 808 drum sound and the bass is pulsing again for sure. It’s got just the right amount of sinister without going full sci-fi dystopia. Vocals bust out on the third tune and I think I will tip out as I have plenty more to listen to and I prefer my electronic music instrumental.
@@@ Lié – You Want It Real (Mint) Indie rawk! Great for a viral pandemic, a little chaos, a little rocking. This first tune rocks more than a bit, it’s straight up rocking it old school whackadoodle punk rock. Not sure on the gender of the singer (it doesn’t matter), buzzy bass, escalated tempo, freak out! I appreciate the no bullshit approach here, sometimes you just want to kick out the jams. The feel here is one of punk dissatisfaction and venting. The third tune, Bugs, takes it up another notch, so good for them! 21 minutes or almost unhinged punk/rock, good shit. I should not have started with the phrase ‘a little rocking’, it’s far from that.
@@@ Andy Shauf – Neon Skyline (Arts & Crafts/Anti-) We switch gears bigly and head out for some late ’70s comforting macaroni and cheese soft rock. You could take a nap and use this as a blanket. I guess there are two kinds of people out there — folks who might experience this music as comforting and others who might find it inappropriate for our times. Not inappropriate bad just out of step. Neither is either correct or not, it just is. Myself, I find this oddly out of place in relation my experience living today. I think of this as an indie James Taylor, just a pube of quirk to go with your smooth rock. Do with this music what you see fit to do with it, I’m respectfully moving on.
@@@ Les Deuxluxes – Lighter Fluid (Bonsound) Our last listen of the week, I certainly hope everybody has enjoyed themselves. I know I have. This record is slotted as psychedelic in Apple Music and the first tune has a bit but it also sports a fair amount of boogie rock and classic surf rock. We will see how far these guys push the tooth grinding abrasion of classic psychedelic music. The guitar player is really standing out in this first tune and there’s an interesting contrast between the popping guitar and the smoother sound of the singer, I dig that. The second tune, No Way, continues the reality that these guys are a rock band with surf and then psychedelic feels and they’ve made a really good record. These guys are from Canada so maybe they have a slightly different take on rock and flavoring it with psych and whatnot. For a rock record there are some subtleties here’s that help this record stand out. I’m going to circle back on this record when I have the time. Enjoy your quarantine wherever you are and stay safe!!!
