Music for 3/12/20!!! Evritiki Zygia, Blakkamoore, KOKOROKO, Lil’ Yachty

@@@ EVRITIKI ZYGIA: Ormenion (Teranga Beat, 2020)  There is only one pre-release track available from what the label is calling an ecstatic Greek music record.  It is a 5 minute track called Karsllamas featuring a lot of drumming, what sounds like an organ.  That is the intro and then it expands out into a section of woodwinds (and a vioilin) including an active flute player.  It’s pretty high energy and entertaining and reflects North African and other Mediterranean influences at many points in this one tune.

@@@ Blakkamoore: Mash Down Georgetown (Baco, 2020)  A Brooklyn singer/dancehall rapper/MC busts out with a tight dancehall sound.  Whoever did the basslines on this track stole the show though Blakkamoore hits the mic hard with both rhymes and singing.   I see from some casual GooglePimping that Blakkamoore grew up in Georgetown Guyana so that explains the title while it also appears this track first appeared in 2017 and has been re-issued or re-released very recently.  It’s hot with respect for the basslines and the MC.

@@@ KOKOROKO | “Carry Me Home” [Single] (Brownswood, 2020)  A jazz single with heavy Afrobeat feels I got to via the WRIR weekly playlist email.  Some dreamy keyboard sounds/playing and swaggering horn playing are feature here as well as some rootsy hippie-ish background vocal action.  It’s got a decent trumpet solo but this track is part of a UK scene where all sorts of mashes of music with jazz flavorings gets celebrated as nu jazz.  To me this is old school, stoned out hippie soul from the ’70s and doesn’t contain the interesting playing I expect from great jazz.

@@@ Lil Yachty, Drake & Da Baby: Oprah’s Bank Account (Motown, 2020) Lil Yachty, with his Autotuned business and his off kilter microphone work and the humor of his titles and lyrics is entertaining.  I’m a bit surprised Drake gets down with Lil Yachty but as I’ve said many times before it’s not possible to take a quiet shit without Drake popping up and dropping a couple of verses.  There’s some interesting weird ass piano parts in this tune and he’s praising his girl by saying she looks as good as Oprah’s bank account.  Lyrically there’s not much more than the hook and while the sounds are solid the tune has a slightly disposable feel to it.  Funny title and a good hook but a bit under baked and they were probably fully baked in the studio.
