Music for 3/10/20!!! Cheb Runner, The Keystones, Vladislav Delay, mmmonika

@@@  Cheb Runner: Tagnawit EP (Rebelup Records, 2020)  I got to this electronic world music out of Belgium.  The blurb from the label highlights how the artist is trying to fuse traditional Moroccan gnawa music with electronic music.  There are two songs on this EP and the first is heavily rhythmic with a little funky synth swirl, some vocal chanting as well as some soaring vocal work.  Correction, there are 4 songs on the EP and two are currently up for pre-release streaming.  The second tune is a different groove — murkier and trippier, I dig it as much if not more than the opener.  The vocoder is a really nice touch as it takes a classic rock sound and puts it in a different context.  The mix for this tune Chorafa is stuffed just to the right amount with layers of bubbling sounds and rhythms.  I would check more of this out.

@@@ The Keystones: WLVS (Self-released, 2020)  I was contacted by the band to do a review of their music. Mainstream rock with huge guitar sounds, a touch of classic FM rock and I was going to say a bit of grunge but that’s not the case.  It’s got a wee bit of glam but not much.  Very nice sounds here including the distortion on the bass and the vocals — they’ve put something on that track that makes it sound interesting.  The arrangement revolves around a circular guitar riff that is not constant (thanks for the break) and that changes in places.  I’m not a huge rock guy these days but this is high energy modern rock.

@@@ Vladislav Delay: Rakka (Cosmo Rhythmatic, 2020) I checked out a record by this gent Delay a bunch of years ago and liked it a whole bunch and then all of a sudden I saw him mentioned on the Twatter yesterday.  Imagine that, the Twatter!  The album opens with the tune clipped below and it is politely aggro with a schmear of dreaminess to it.  It builds up a head of steam both rhythmically and energy wise towards…..it is partly ambient music and not quite industrial music but it’s pushing the boundaries of a full mix.  The intensity ebbs and returns throught the 7 minute tune.  I’m on the third tune and the battering wall of rhythms and noise continues so I have to retract my first statement — it is an industrial music record as it aims to overwhem the listener sonically the way industrial and metal music does.  I like this without loving it and am happy to have checked it out.

@@@ mmmonika: Don’t Do It ( , 2020) I got to this indie rock tune via a music publicist email.  It rocks an ironic thing with a super manic pop sound and then the first lines say ‘don’t do it, don’t have dreams!’  While these sounds are not some of my favorites I do like the pumping of the drums, the manic energy, and most of all the hook is fricking relevant and well played.  This will definitely be one of the best tracks I will hear this week.
