Music for 3/6/20!! Darkoo, Beatrice Dillon, Badsista, Mass Worship

Darkoo

@@@ Darkoo: Gangsta (Virgin EMI, 2019) A blend of hip hop and r&b off last year’s Guardian musicians to look out for in 2020.  Slight African flavors I like and there’s no polite way to say she is swinging her coochie all over this track including the phrase ‘sticking my pussy in your face’.  That is loving somebody like a gangster.  I like the arrangement very much, it’s a percolating stew of processed vocals, a little jumpy piano, and other goodies tucked up in there.  The lyrics, meh, but I do wish her luck with her cooch.

BeatriceDillon

@@@ Beatrice Dillon: Workaround (PAN, 2020) Experimental IDM with all the record titles including the word workaround except for three.  In this first tune she pops up with a South Asian hand drum manipulated and the set off against other rhythms.  The arrangement is spacious and sharp with occasional insect buzzes and a booty shaking bass note.  I think this is really nice, let’s check more.  The second tune is slightly different, still popping with a lot of rhythm but an oozy horn like synth melody comes over the top.  She’s a very disciplined arranger, she’s just giving what you need and not more and more importantly not less.   I find this to be a very satisfying blend of sonic abstraction and straight dancefloor action.  I will swing back and check out more of this when I get time but Dillon is a craftswoman and I get with her approach.

Badsista

@@@ Badsista: Machooka (femme culture, 2019)  You can check the blurb above but it’s a track exploding with rhythmic energy and flavor.  Processed vocal chants for the first half of the track before a female singer comes into the mix, sings a bit and then starts chanting the word machooka.  Let’s GooglePimp that word.  I can’t find shit but I’m guessing it means something in Brazil.  This is high end world music dancefloor action.

MassWorship

@@@ Mass Worship: Mass Worship (Century Media, 2019)  We finish our week with some metal and right out of the gate this record unleashes an epic monster stomp.  Watch out all you froggies out there!!!  The singer is angry but his family left the caves a long time ago and he’s not sounding like some sort of Lord of the Rings character.  I’m feeling the drummer and the drum sound here bigly, he/she is really driving the bus here.  The guitars are good at providing a rhythmic layer to the track and I don’t believe I’ve heard any shreddy squeals to this point.
