Music for 3/5/20!!! Tame Impala, Drama, Tim Berne, The Third Mind

@@@ Tame Impala: The Slow Rush (Interscope, 2020) I seen a Tame Impala big ass billboard in Times Square so somebody put up some loot for that and these guys are rock star material Imma guessing.  Slotted as alternative this first tune is a major label white boy dancefloor banger.  A little white people’s nostalgia for good measure, I do like the pumping synth arrangement while being unimpressed by the rhythms.  Half funky.  It’s a curious blend of upbeat sounds and wistfulness.  For example, when you drop the needle on an Earth Wind and Fire the goal is pure party joy, I don’t get that off this record.  The production is extremely manicured and I think overall the record needs to embrace one vibe or another.

@@@ Drama: Dance Without Me (Ghostly, 2020) I’ve been a bit less than blown out regarding recent Ghostly releases but I still listen.   Now this record knows what it is, it’s a lonely, downtempo chill r&b record.  I like the singer (as opposed to the Tame Impala singer who I don’t really enjoy) she sounds the part of the lonely bird.  She brings up the rhythmic energy on the third tune and it’s a dancefloor banger that works as a coherent track.  This is why you have to listen for yourself.  This is a really nice and given that I just bemoaned recent Ghostly releases this is some fine shit that I wouldn’t have heard if I hadn’t stopped by.

@@@ Tim Berne’s Snakeoil: Fantastic Mr. 10 (Intakt, 2020) Off this week’s All Music notable release email.  After an intro figure the whole ensemble comes in and it consists of sax, piano, guitar, a second horn, and bass and drums and maybe something I missed.  It has a jagged Henry Threadgill energy without being that.  This is a monster shot of a record clocking in at 67 minutes via 7 pieces with 3 of them over 10+ minutes.  So whatever happens for a bunch of the record it’s gonna happen at a somewhat slow pace.  I like this second tune, Surface Noise, and I’m gonna sample a bit more.  It looks like the third tune, Rolo, is set to burn all the way through its 13 minute length and I’m feeling it.  I dig this and recommend it for folks looking for some energetic, non-straight jazz.

@@@ The Third Mind: The Third Mind (Yep Roc, 2020).   I’m a bit surprised to see the first tune titled Journey in Satchinanda which to me evokes Alice Coltrane.  And when you GooglePimp the phrase Journey in Satchinanda only Alice Coltrane shows up so I guess it’s a jam rock homage to her.  I think it’s safe to say you can get out your CBD for this tune.  Spacious in arrangement and large in sound.  More GooglePimping reveals that this outfit is a supergroup (don’t care one way or another) and the goal was to form a group that could perform in a manner similar to Bitches Brew Miles Davis.  They’ve done all right in that respect I would say, but being a freak I’m always up for something further out.  The second tune moves to an old school hippie rock thing with a singer.  I like it less than the intro track but it’s all right.  I’m on the fourth tune and I feel best about the intro track.  The signing is fine but it’s a tad retro for my taste.  Fine playing, epic hippie feels (centered mostly in the guitar).
