@@@ Lauran Hibberd: Everything Is Dogs EP (Self-released, 2020) Retro Breeders style femme fronted power pop punk off the Line of Best Fit. It’s chill in the verse, guess what’s coming? You guessed it, the chorus crush. It’s a pretty standard formula — a big drum sound, verse-chorus yadda yadda yadda, but her breathy voice adds a bit of teasing flirtatiousness to the proceedings. I find it lessens the humor of the formula and makes it sound more mercenary.
@@@ Juniore: Un, Dieux, Trois (Le Parlophone, 2020) More pop is what the Line of Best Fit is saying but a female singing in French an un-American pop feel. It’s a tad poppy while it’s also a bit dark and trippy. I have a fair number of French pop records and they can be more expansive than its American counterpart which is basically a softcore porn show. The French will give you a little lounge, some pop, a tad of rock and maybe a few touches of stinky cheese to funk-a-fy the proceedings. This record is higher on the lounge factor and less dreamy than a bunch of what I’ve heard.
@@@ Caribou: Suddenly (Merge, 2020) I’m gonna be honest here, I get Caribou confused with Deertick and Deerhoof and Mooseneck. That last band doesn’t exist btw. He’s rocking an intimate electronic indie thing on this first tune. The second tune brings in the live drummer and it’s suddenly more of a soft, classic rock thing. This is some Air Supply type shit with updated electronic sounds. Man, an MC came in to the middle of this wishing water fountain and started dropping rhymes and I just thought, no you didn’t. No you didn’t.
@@@ BLACK MARKET BRASS: Undying Thirst (Colemine, 2019) Let’s throw something in here from WRIR’s weekly playlist email. This first tune comes out swinging Afrobeat style with swaggering horn lines and a multitude of percussion. I’m on the third tune and it’s been all instrumental up to this point. I dig that as I find a lot of Afrobeat singers a bit righteous for my taste but it also leaves you with a bit less to listen to. I like the horn playing here, they have big ass energy but I haven’t heard a head ripping solo that really pulled me in and kicked my ass. I could use some fire like that and some sections where they come out of the groove and go back into it. Otherwise a fine party Afrobeat record. Oh, some baritone horn player just started braying like a donkey so I got some fire and flavor. Sooner people, give me this shit sooner.
