@@@ Lukas Nelson: Civilized Hell (Fantasy, 2020) A classic rock tinged country in the Tom Petty neighborhood. All of today’s listens are off this week’s All Music notable release email. Pretty fair amount of power chords, straight rock drumming. Nelson’s voice is grizzled, a little Dylan-y but certainly not the reptilian croak of the present day Zimmerman. The song goes out on a big guitar jam and that’s fine.
@@@ Sorry: As the Sun Sets (Domino, 2020) Brit rock off an eagerly awaited debut apparently. It’s a thicket of guitars and maybe a spaced out organ sound that the female singer stands in front of and sings. To my ears it’s got a bit of art school and a bit of tongue in cheek. I’m most impressed by the arrangement and the sounds, it’s got a bit of a resigned, blase stance that weighs it down a bit. Not a hair mussed on their poser brows, drama but no drama if you get my drift.
@@@ Daniel Avery: Illusion of Time (Phantasy/Mute, 2020) Ping pong synths and hiss right out of the gate. Oooh, I like that bass when it comes in, it is gloriously fat and wide. The New Age-ish piano, not so much love for that. You could picture this as a movie soundtrack for a bunch of white guys racing around a track, striving and reaching for ever greater performance, and they’re doing it for love and something else so good and pure. And the winner collapses across the finish line and explodes into a fiery spasm of diarrhea that he’s been holding in the whole race. I mean a world class shitshow, shit everywhere. It turns out he’s been racing to the toilet and he didn’t make it. God, the sadness and the bittersweet beauty of it all. It’s at times like these that I feel you’re all so lucky to have me.
@@@ Jacaszek: The Zone (Ghostly, 2020) More electronic, this time out of the Ghostly side of town. Another nice bass, more upright than dancefloor and no ping pong synth (yet!!! we can dream). Eerie piano comes in, lays down some lonesome, a little string-esque small bow scrape (electro simulation therein). Then a swirling drone, very slow and high frequency. It’s got some of the bittersweet of the track above but not as much of the New Age, it focuses more on a cinematic feel than an emotional evocation. And then it kind of ends without a big fanfare/climax/resolution and I like that lack of bigness at the end to be a real virtue.
@@@ Half Waif: Halogen 2 (Anti-, 2020) Female electro singer songwriter, a place Anti- has been rocking pretty steady for a while now. A little dancefloor, a little pop, a world music tiny pube, and she does indeed have a half waif flow on the microphone. It’s an updated Kate Bush thing without the same overwhelming drama. It’s like when you go to a pizza place, they make a choice of how much cheese to put on your slice, that’s their job. This has plenty of cheese on the slice and she puts more on as the tune builds. Now the question as to whether this is too much cheese for a slice of pizza is entirely personal. As far as I’m concerned she’s over the line but not by a ton but she’s just shy of some flowing dress and spinning around in a super feely way. As always check for yourself.
