Music for 2/13/20!!! Prince Royce, Sepultura, Khruangbin

@@@ Prince Royce: Alter Ego (Sony, 2020)  Slick and thick tropical Loverboy music I got to via the All Music notable release email.  This first tune sports a very dense and layered mix.  It’s a headphone banger for sure and I’m enjoying the blend of sounds more than I’m enjoying his panty quaking tone of singing.  Big ups to the conga player, then the producer, and finally the guitar player as you don’t usually hear anything more than a guitar vibe on most mainstream music these days.  This is super well executed but it’s for the ladies.

@@@ Sepultura: Quadra (Nuclear Blast, 2020) The 15th album from Brazilian rock gods Sepultura and I dig them.  My son loves them to shit so I peep this for him as well.  It’s an epic production sound they’ve gotten here — you feel like you’re at the top of the mountain, storm clouds off in the distance the view expansive.  And then the crush!  The thrashy skull crush.  If you read the blurb on Apple Music, and you should, they go for a sort of career retrospective here with some thrash, and then some tribal business, and then some instrumental stuff, all reflecting phases of their musical output.  These guys should be admired for their energy as they still deliver the goods.  I find myself starting to get pumped up, always a good sign of a successful heavy music album.  I want to go burn somebody’s house down.  I feel the last third a bit less than the rest but not based on the execution of the tunes or the sounds.

@@@ Khruangbin: Texas Sun (Dead oceans, 2020)  A collaboration EP between an instrumental group and a soul revivalist singer.  It’s most definitely gonna have a retro flow both in the playing and the singing.  I’ve always enjoyed Bridges’ voice as he’s got a pleasant blend of gravelly and sweetness.  Oooh, very nice slide playing on this first track, Imma sucker for some nice slide guitar.  While I dig both components of the record and it has very solid production (probably a product of the Khruangbin being an instrumental group focusing on their sound) I could use some more cooking, you know some more energy.  It’s a bit slow for me.  Otherwise, blunted hipsters could get up on this and ride.
