Polished drum/drill and bass with a sprinkling of New Age melodic cheese. I got to this record via All Music’s notable release email. I wasn’t expecting this combination of sounds and am finding it disorienting and not very pleasant for me personally. Lots of video game synth patches and intricate quasi romantic melodies. It’s like Mickey Mouse went drum and bass. Oy, I assume there’s an audience for this but it’s not me.
Alternative music off this week’s All Music notable release email. It opens with a strumming acoustic guitar and a waif-y female voice. It’s indie epicness and while it’s not my cup of tea I’m finding it well done. It opens out into a full band thing and the loose feel is appreciated over here. She puts some classic rock feels up into the proceedings as well. I think the music gets a bit overwrought when it goes full band and her voice works better for me when it’s stripped down but they are doing a rock thing pretty well.
#1 and #2 on today’s Apple Music hot tracks section — God what a country we live in! My perception of Tay Tay’s recent work is that she’s more than a bit adrift and out of a conservative urge a thirst for relevance and loot brings her back to her roots. Pop cheese with a patina of meaning. She’s got a somewhat hip beat to the track and lyrically she’s working some uprising of young folks to fix the world. Not to be attack-y and shit it’s pretty close to laughable that Taylor (daughter of a high net worth Merrill broker) would position herself as an outsider/leader of anything. I hear this as flattery of her fans with very little (if any artistic worth).
On the second track we have Beebs, recently accused of emotional abuse by his ex Selena Gomez. The music here is a thicker, more syrupy and way darker than Swift’s flourescent pop. He’s working his fucked in the head whiteboy loverboy schtick but it’s dialled down here and I do like the sounds. I think it’s possible to conclude just from Bieber’s facial expressions in his music that he’s pretty much a damaged piece of trash (I believe he’s pretty much admitted in different phrasing) but the sounds do pull this tune out of the toilet.
