Music for 1/17/20!!! Locobeach, Sonora Casion, Aleks di Roma, Batunga and the Subprimes

LOCOBEACH | Psychedelic Disco Cumbia (Dorsal Fin/Peace & Rhythm, 2019)  There’s a lot of cumbia floating around which is great as it’s a fine musical form easily updated for today’s modern ears.  Or post modern ears.  These guys focus on the guitars and the retro organ, both of which are catchy as shit here.  A smooth singer comes in and pops a crooner’s vibe into the steady rhythms and melodic playing.  They get into some disco type action, some lounge business, and a wee bit of dub and some rock but I’m on the fifth tune and the singer has been on one track.

SONORA CASINO | Trompeteros (Vampisoul, 2019) All of today’s listens come from WRIR’s weekly email.  This is a reissue of a 1972 record that comes out February 7th so it’s not up on Apple Music though the original 1972 release is up there.  Mad confusing.  I will give it a short peep and then probably see if they remastered the record after it comes out in February.  This is high end party music — pumping horns and a flamboyant singer with mad percussion and piano.  It’s a crowded mix for sure and it’s a full on party!  I will return to this after the reissue comes out but these guys will get fannies out on the dancefloor.

ALEKS DI ROMA | Alma Del Sur (self-released, 2019)  An updated take on romantic, nylon guitar driven Latin music.  A little melancholy trumpet on the first track and some pleasant singing on these first two tracks.  I like the trumpet and the singing but I don’t like the adult alternative/smooth jazz vibes that creep up here and there.  Born in the Ukraine but living here most of his life (googled his bio) you gotta give props to somebody making a huge cultural leap out of their love of a certain musical style.

BATUNGA AND THE SUBPRIMES | “Gates Of Ouantou” [Single] (Matasuna, 2019)  A retro and militant Afrobeat with a little Santana swirled up in there.  Rhythmic and on fleek horn work with some organ and guitar panned out to the sides to fill out the track.  All instrumental and poppin.
