Music for 1/2/20!!! Bomba Estereo, Miramar, Dubioza Kolektiv, Los Bitchos, Jamesy P.

Today I will be listening to the top 5 singles from the world music station WRIR in Virginia.  It is a great independent world music radio station and should be supported.

@@@ Bomba Estereo — Colombian cumbia with other influences including rock and psych.  Major label production, a big bombastic party single.  I like the guitar parts and the beat, but I find the lyrics pretty repetitive.

@@@ Miramar: Salida (Daptone, 2019) These guys went from Brooklyn label Barbes in 2016 to the wayback time machine sound of Daptone in 2019.  It is decidedly retro and the recording technology makes the tune sound like a re-issue from back in the day.  I dig the formula of romantic world/Latin music with lounge and rock flavor packs but this doesn’t have me jumping up and down.

@@@ Dubioza Kolektiv & Manu Chao: Cross the Line (Menart, 2019)  A collaborative that mashes up a lot of sounds — Eastern European Gogol Bordello flavors, reggae, Latin music, etc.  It’s about border crossings and the right to cross borders.  Like the first track very bombastic sounds, power chords, dancefloor and dancehall sounds, with a little dubwise.  I like the topic, I don’t love the beats or some of the cheesy sounds.

@@@ Los Bitchos: Pista (Self-released, 2019)  More Latin business!  5 women from London rocking tequila and cumbia feels, that’s their bio.  A pleasantly organic sound to the track with a bit of not giving a fuck to the sounds and the playing which makes it more partyistic.  Fuzzy guitars, some not, exclamatory singing, piles and piles of guitars.  Could be the highlight of the day for my ears.

@@@ Jamesy P: Soca Land (Monk/Soca Universe, 2019)  Off a compilation on Apple Music it’s a full Caribbean dancefloor monster shot.  Mr. P hits the mic with maximum energy and percussive/rhythmic background.  It’s a modern update on the soca sound with call and response vocals and synth horns.  A cup of coffee for your ears.
