@@@ Snoh Aalegra: Ugh, those feels Again (AWAL, 2019) Off this week’s Line of Best Fit email. An Iranian/Swedish woman flying the flag for global r&b, that’s how this is being marketed. This first tune (after the intro) is a luscious mix of sounds with Aalegra’s sultry singing. I find myself listening more the sounds than the songs as a whole which is a common thing I find in major label music, more attention to the sound and a watered down or less memorable message. I guess she has some association with Drake but she’s rougher than pillow man Drake! I would jump up and down if this had high end lyrics but the corporate folks won’t do that.
@@@ M.T. Hadley: Empty (PIAS, 2019) Also off this week’s Line of Best Fit email. Slotted as alternative on Apple Music this is ’80s inspired electro pop with blue eyed falsetto vocal stylings. This is really not my cup of tea but I can review it for others. Synth-centric sounds, lighter and not funky drum machine rhythms. Folks who want some sweet, electro love songs will be happy with this.
@@@ Greve: Palace of the Dreamking (PARMA, 2019) I’m on the email list for this New Hampshire classical/jazz label and found this release on their latest email. The record opens with a orchestral piece and it is a compilation of various orchestras playing the music of this contemporary Dutch composer. I’ve been listening to a fair amount of classical music but I’m far from being an expert. However this first piece strikes as being very cinematic with a lot of melodic parts assigned to various components of the orchestra. It is sweet but far from sickly. The second pieces is a suite for 11 brass instruments. I like this for the instrumentation. I’m going to tip after this partita but I really like that it encompasses a variety of musical modes and impressions. It’s quite engaging.
