@@@ Divino Nino: Foam (Winspear, 2019) I saw these guys twatted about as some rando dude’s favorite band. So here we are! First tune and they’re coming on full indie funk/disco. A bold look I must say, and time will tell if the rhythm section is up to the task. First impression, not quite. Multiple synths, some percussion and a classic indie singer — heavy on the slack and light on the bounce. The second tune is gonna be a ballad and while I might hang for a peep this is too far to the indie side and not firmly grounded in funk and disco. I love funk, disco not as much so I take those dabbling in funk to be fucking with something I hold dear. Somewhat joking there. I have my issues with the indie music aesthetic (it’s unembarrassed whiteness being right up front) but if it sounds like something you might be into then get in there and honkey it up!
@@@ Josh Kroehn: Something I’ve Found (Spoodle Noodle, 2019) More indie this time off an Australian music mag called Happy. In the first tune it’s an indie guitar sound but singer songwriter up top as he works in some decent melody and lyrics meant to be listened to. Whoa, he flipped the switch and went full Smashing Pumpkins! Nice and jarring and not nearly as annoying as Billy Corgan. Back to the clean guitar picking, ah what a joker. It’s a confessional type of thing which is not my favorite but he goes for that same acoustic quiet then rocking thing he did in the opener. I like his guitar playing a bunch and the sonic contrasts are the most interesting aspect of the listen for me.
