Music for 10/7/19!!! Dirty Honey, Cassie Rytz, Angel Olson

@@@ Dirty Honey: When I’m Gone (Dirty Honey, 2019)  These gents are trying to bring the rock back and I saw the music biz big mouth Bob Lefsetz do a blurb on them.  This first tune is very very familiar with a Guns ‘n Roses type singer, some big 1970’s guitar sounds and arena rock drumming.  I’m open to listening to new rock but I don’t think it would be this record.  I don’t hear anything of their own to hold onto and pull me in, it’s a franken-rock job that takes this sound from this record and this singer from this band.  No crazy drummer, weird ass drum beats, nothing like that, it’s a reissue.

@@@ Cassie Rytz: Starts Here (A4Ward, 2019) Off this week’s Line of Best Fit email.  She’s a young UK grime artist and I’ve never understood the difference between grime and UK hip hop.  Regular readers know how much I make fun of British MCs on the mic, it just sounds so regal when they do it, but Ms. Rytz spits with the same accent but she’s rough.  I’m hearing some Caribbean inflected Brit rhymes so that explains my affection for the microphone work.  There’s a long tradition of toasting and rhyming with the Caribbean folks.  The sounds here are a bit different from standard American trap music but not that far off, but it’s really Rytz that carries the ball here.  I’ve checked portions of four tunes and she rhymes fast and she rhymes fast really well so her technical skills are impressive.  I know a lot of white folks don’t see rhyming as a skill but the shit ain’t easy and what she’s doing takes breath control, a good sense of rhythm and a lot of energy.  Her energy really pushes this record up.

@@@ Angel Olson: All Mirrors (Jagjaguwar, 2019)  I got to this via the Line of Best Fit weekly email.  Olson is from North Carolina and this looks to be a slack indie/alt country singer songwriter type of thing.  I think she’s going for an old school Dusty Springfield kinda schtick as she has the rock band but also string arrangements in this first tune.  I’m not sure if the string arrangements on the opener are done via synthesizer but the second tune comes out torching with a gated snare sound and ’80s synth sounds.  I don’t think Olson has the strength and power in her voice to carry these giant emotional songs.  Her voice is fine but the reason Mariah Carey is worth 500 million dollars is her ability to pull off these giant ass cheesy anthems that hit with the power of a million schmaltzy suns.
