@@@ Sturgill Simpson: Sonic Fury (Elektra, 2019) The Guardian gave this record 5 stars which is kinda rare so I thought that earned a peep. I like the Guardian’s music coverage without loving it. This record not only got mad love in the Guardian it’s got a huge ass blurb in the Apple Music so you can see the folks in charge of Music are behind this effort. I don’t believe it’s gonna be a classic country record, it’s gonna be a hybrid — some twang, some punk and some whatever. Going against the grain this first tune is a massive guitar rock jam. It’s good, I like the drummer. The first two tunes were epic rockers with country feels but the third one goes more mainstream with a crushed drum sound and very little redneck action. I can’t say I think this is a 5 star record to my ears. It is an interesting update on a ZZ Top country/blues/redneck ’70s big guitar rock formula and I find the drummer and the guitar player to be the musicians I’m listening to most here. You even get a dance track with the fourth tune ‘A Good Look’. If you crave the combination of dance beats and rock I would suggest a classic Funkadelic record as nobody quite does that combo the way they do.
@@@ Opeth: In Cauda Venenum (Nuclear Blast, 2019) Off this week’s All Music notable release email. Some Scandinavian metal that opens with a church-y vocal choir before we get to the Beezlebub stomp and the baby skull crushing. I’m not sure I’ve heard these gents before but hearing the synth and the opener Imma thinking this is not gonna be a straight and predictable run. The second tune brings the noise, but not your dirty gutter water metal, it’s pretty high minded and aspirational. Big guitar riffs, clean production etc, a little proggy action up in here. There has been a paucity of vocals thus far but it sounds like a muscular Styx record — dramatical as shit. Oh the singer comes on in for the third tune and it supports my case of this being a Styx record in disguise. I respect the technical skills required to make a record like this, but it’s not really my cup of tea.
@@@ Project Pablo: The Solution (Ghostly, 2019) This is the pre-release single for a 4 song EP out on 11/1. I saw this announced up on the Twatter — friggin’ love the hateful Twatter. Not really but I enjoy typing the word Twatter and wish it would catch on with others. It’s classic minimalist techno with some funk to it. Very clean synth sounds with a fair amount of reverb and delay on them to stretch and deepen the percussive bleeps and clouds and bell like sounds. It’s an 8 minute dancefloor banger so it unfolds as you would expect an 8 minute track to unfold. More melody, a change of beats, some additional percussive elements. This track is clean like a porn star’s freshly shaved and perfumed muffin. It just is and I mean no disrespect to either the track of perfumed muffins. When it rounds the bend and heads down the final 1/4 of the track it’s fully blossomed. Big drumbeat, lots of synth pulses, burts of cloud synths, some funky bits, the whole techno shebang. It’s a good muffin, well manicured.
